Unhappy 86 Ranger cuts off and on

I have an 86 Ford Ranger fuel injected V-6. I was driving along the other day and it cut off. The truck was not overheating. It was running nicely until it cut off. While waiting for the tow truck, about 30 minutes after it cut off I tried to start the engine. It started. I still had it towed to the house. I replaced the ignition module and it ran fine for about a week and it cut off on me again. The engine started cutting off and on while I was running. It’s as if you are driving along and you turn the key off and turn it right back on.
So this time I replaced the module again (I returned the one I bought for another one) and the coil. The other day I was running down the highway and it started cutting out again and I had it towed again. When I got home it started fine. I don’t know what it could be now. I am not able to rely on it right now. What could it be?

Thanks Mark

Re: 86 Ranger cuts off and on

Why did you decide to change the ignition module? Have you checked for spark or fuel pressure while it's not starting?

I have the same indication with my 88 Ranger 2.9. Have had a error code analyzer put on it and no errors are notated. Mine has progressed to the point that everymorning when I head out, it runs for 10-12 minutes and dies. Sit for a few minutes, 2 - 15, and it starts and runs for the rest of the day, unless you allow it to cool for 4-5 hours, then the same thing. have replaced the coil, module on the distributor, both fuel pumps, bypassed the inertia relay, and it still persists. Today, it died on the road, and while coasting in gear, I pumped the footfeed, and lo and behold it started up. 3 miles down the road, it died again, pumped the feed again and it tried. Coasted to side, hit the switch, and headed down the road. Ran all day without a prob. I'm starting to think the throttle position sensor may have a prob..... Anyone able to comment on what happens if the sensor is somewhat intermittant???

Re: 86 Ranger cuts off and on

try looking at the ignition swith inside the steering columb where the wiring harness connects to the actual switch. not the ignition key cylinder. my 84 did the same thing. the actual switch was starting to come apart.
