No Check engine light

My current vehicle, a 1996 Dodge caravan, 3.0, has no check engine light. It will not pass the state inspection because the "MIL" light does not illuminate. The dealer says that some 1996 models do not have an MIL light. The state says otherwise. Looking at the dash with a flashlight you can see the spot that says check engine. I was told there is a wiring diagram from Dodge that shows that the 1996 does not have it, however, inquiries at the dealer have proved pointless. I have checked with AllData, their diagrams show the vehicle equipped with the light. Can anyone help? I'm looking at a 250 dollar fine for not having my vehicle inspected and suspension of the registration.

Thanks
Ozzie

Re: No Check engine light

I also have a 96 w/3.0, no check engine light, but there is a "service engine soon" on the lower right corner of the dash. It should come on momentairily when you first turn the key on, if not, maybe the bulb is burned out. Or maybe yours dosen't have one, but I thought anything with OBDI or II had them. Good luck!
