2003 Outback H6-3.0 Performance

I own a 2003 Outback Wagon H6-3.0 with an Automatic (no other option). It is fine transportation but a dog when it comes to performance. The dealer tells me it is the way the electronics in the transmission are programmed. Once it gets rolling it is fine but getting it moving is a chore even if you mat it. I had an older Audi with a V6 with less horsepower but a manual and it flew.

1 - Any idea if that is really the case?

2 - If so is there a way to change the electronics?

3 - If not what are my options?

Thanks for any suggestions

Alan

Go back to the earlier 2.5 Outback. They are killing the machine with too much technology!!!

Unhappy Re: 2003 Outback H6-3.0 Performance

My wife has a 2002 Outback wagon with the same H6-3.0 engine. The performance needs a lot be desired. It's acceptable in around town driving and OK on major interstates, so long as the roads are flat. But, when we drive up to the mountain house once or twice a month, the transmission hunts constantly between overdrive and 3rd/4th gear going up even the slightest grade when trying to maintain 70 mph. These are not big mountains, max elevation being only about 2800 ft.

By comparison, my older '92 Sentra SE-R (with the 2.0L engine) would pull up those same mountains in 5th gear are hardly a missed beat. If needed, I could still accelerate briskly in 5th without having to downshift, even going up the steepest grade.
