Need suggestions for 88 z

What's up everyone! I recently got a 88 2+2 automatic non turbo. It's a really nice looking ride. I had a race recently with a 88-90 mustang 5.0 Yeah I got smoked! I was hangin with him at first but he started to pull away and I couldn't catch him. What could I do to increase speed and horse power? I plan on making my ride more of a eye catcher but I still want to be able to hang with the big boys. Any suggestions apprecitated!

Re: Need suggestions for 88 z

Get rid of it...

Haha, just playing.

Drop in a Z32's VG30DE powertrain, Mike Man on here is doing the swap, and apperently its coming along.

Just think about the Horsepower jump... 222bhp. Thats quite a bit man.

Run a loop on the MAF, get some AMZ Headers, Twin Turbo Injectors, straight back exhaust... You'll be hanging with them.

Otherwise I dont know of much you can do to get much power out of a VG30E... LoveLiveTheZ could probably tell you... He's the Z31 guy on here.

I'd go with the VG30DE idea too... like Wes said: mikeman is doing this so talk to him. As for your Z31/VG30E... I don't know much about mods but as mentioned, STILLEN and JWT has parts for 'em....

Re: Need suggestions for 88 z

Oh God bless ya, Sam...I love getting props.

As for the NA Z31: There are tons of performance parts out there for the VG30E, contrary to popular belief.

First off, put on a K&N cone filter (a mere ~$60 and a quick 10 min install), get a 2.5" cat back exhaust, and get headers and I think you'd be doin pretty well at this point without going too far beyond the realm of affordable. Now, if you have more money, then you get a new ECU, new cams, and NISMO heads (lemme know if you want the link). After THAT, you should be rockin along pretty damn well. Do some lightening of the chassis (eg removing interior body panels, padding, get new lightweight racing seats, etc) and you'll be well on your way to making a DAMN fast NA Z31...which we desparately need more of in the world. Nitrous is ALWAYS the best power addition to any N/A engine, only surpassed by a turbo.

Quick "staged" summary for you:

Stage I: Pretty easy and cheap stuff.
  • K&N filter. (DEFINATE MUST DO)
  • 2.5" cat back exhaust. (And 3" inch is over kill, so don't do it...not needed on an N/A...all you do is lose torque.)

Stage II: Little more involved and pricy.
  • Headers. (BIG power gain, from what I understand.)
  • Nitrous. (Get a wet system, preferrably. A staged system might be a bit over kill for an N/A.)

Stage III: Pretty much the N/A ultimate.
  • NISMO heads.
  • JWT ECU.
  • Cams.

After that, you might as well build the engine. Rip it out, tear it apart, get new rods, balance the crank, new everything, overbore the block to 3.3L, etc.

It all depends on how much money you have.

Re: Need suggestions for 88 z

Well LLTZ, you know your shit about Z31's, props are deserved

Something just crossed my mind... RB20DET's came stock in Z31's in Japan correct?

Why not just swap in an RB?

Re: Need suggestions for 88 z

Thank you, mr. Sam. That really is a HUGH complement to me.

The only Z31 models (that I know of, at least) that had RBs in them were a model called the 200ZR...a.k.a. Z31 Fairlady. I don't know a lot about the car, nor have I ever talked to anyone that did. Here is an ad for one for sale in Australia, I think. I love the hood scoop.

I'd love to find out more about this car cuz I always thought they sounded pretty bad ass. I love I-6s...especially turbo'd Nissan ones. I've done tons of searches and come up pretty much empty handed except that one Japanese site that I can't find right now and the site above.
