to tint or not to tint

I live in NJ and am looking to tint my windows. NJ tint laws allow no front tint and 27 in the back and rear windows. I'd like to do at least 35% for all windows, but I'm not sure if I should plan on getting pulled over for having illegal tints, particularly since I have NY plates (no tint is allowed in NY).

I'm thinking riding with illegal tints is analgous to riding without a seat belt, where it's only really enforced as a secondary offense, but I'm wondering if anyone with tints, particularly in NJ, could offer any advice as far as what to expect.

Additionally, if any of you have suggestions about where to get them done in NJ, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance for all of your help.

in ohio it's something like 50 in front and 35 sides and rear, but as long as you don't go with 5% or something like that you should be OK, and if the cops do say anything it'll either be a non-moving violation or a fix-it ticket, so i'd say go for it

Limo tints are almost always put on the rear windows, which, like a tractor trailer, are not used for the driver to see out of. The privacy glass (if available) makes it impossible to see into the back area, so it's also impossible to see out the back windows.

You'll notice that front windows are almost never tinted as darkly as the windows behind the front doors of a limo.

I don't know what will happen if you get them put on but I DO know (I just moved from Jersey a little more than a year ago) that your car will fail state inspection if it has to much tint. My mom's car had too much and they made her get it taken off and be reinspected. So you may run into a problem there. As far as driving around with the tint you want, well, maybe if it is noticeably too much tint to a police officer, then you may run into trouble. However, I think the police have too much to think about than looking at people's windows to guess the tint.

well CA allows no tint in the front, but what ever the hell you want in the bakc as long as you have side mirror.

but you can always just roll down you windows when you see a cop.

and with fix it tickets, do you have to fix it? or can you just pay the fine.

I have 20% tint (I live in Mass, which is only 35% legal), and I just rolled my windows down for inspection and when I get pulled over.

in florida and ohio window tint tickets dont come up on your record so if you have the money to pay for tickets go for it, of course i dont know how strict they are about tint, in florida where i live they dont really care about it

Re: to tint or not to tint

i heard in drivers ed in ohio that if they pull u over and your tint is to dark they get a razor and put a slash across it. so if u don't get it fixed other cops can identify that it's to dark

You need to find out what tint your state has, most are 35% (As here in VA) and no tint in the front. Generally you can got 5% darker and you won't really get messed with. The only way for an officer to tell what tint you have is this little reading meter (which usually only state troopers have) OR a reciept from the tinting company. If you get pulled over with a really dark tint, the best thing you can do is put ALL the windows down that you can (even if its -12 degrees out or raining) If your windows are manual, don't bounce the car trying to roll down every window. Also, turn on the dome lights in the car. Then put your hands on the steering wheel. Essentially, when an officer pulls you over, if you have a really dark tint, and he can't see in, hes already on gaurd mode, more than likely one hand on his weapon. He doesn't know whats behind the tint. Make it as easy for him as possible to see whats going on in the car and he will be more relaxed and as such, more proned to give you a warning.
