Question 1990 lighter doesn't work

Hello all, first time poster here at auto forums, and a pretty big newbie with car repair.
I bought this 1990 wago about 2 years ago and got a flat tire my first week. So i used my air pumper thing in my roadside kit to pump up my spare. Right when i was done, i heard a spark and the pump stopped. I checked the fuse and it wasn't blown, but the lighter wasn't working any more. I've lived for a year and a half without this thing, except i got a laptop and i want to charge it up when i'm on the road! (talk about a geek huh? )
i really don't want to take it to a dealer to have them charge me 300 bucks to fix it (i'm a poor college student... even thought i can afford a laptop!).
Could someone give me some advice on what is the first steps in trying to figure out something like this?
Thanks for all your wisdom and help!!
Paul

Re: 1990 lighter doesn't work

Paul, on a 90 Century, the fuse for the lighter in the fuse panel is marked as being also shared with the injectors. What you can't see is that there is another fuse in-between the fuse box and the lighter. It's been a while since I did this (so forgive me if I miss a small step), but you'll need to unclip the plastic glove box door retainer straps, remove the screws holding the glove box to glove box door hinge, remove the glove box and remove the screws holding the fuse panel in place. Once you move the fuse panel to the right a little, you'll see another fuse (or two) in the mess of wiring behind the fuse panel. It'll be blown and replacing it with the same rating (should be 20 AMP if I recall correctly) will solve the problem. I would not put in a higher rated fuse to prevent the tire pump from blowing it again, because then the fuse controlling the fuel injectors would blow instead of the lighter fuse and you'd be unable to start the engine. Good luck!

Re: 1990 lighter doesn't work

Wow.... 4 months after i first posted my answer i get an answer! SWEETTTT! I still haven't fixed it so this is great. I even took it to a garage and had them look at it while doing some other work. They said "OH yea, we'll we don't even have the parts to fix it." I'm thinki yea, right.... you just don't want to take the time.
Cool, i now have a weekend job to fix it. Thanks billski!
