need help virus problem

today i received a leter from my internet service provider and they say that i have virus in my computer and they gone disconnect me in 5 days if i don´t fix it and charge me 150 us dollar

but i cant find any virus in my computer and i don´t want to reinstall my computer

so does any one have some good tip what i can

i dont think the police will help with this, my provider is Skanova and they are owned by the swedish government

Well first do you have any antivirus software?


If no try going to:

http://pcpitstop.com/antivirus/default.asp


and

http://symantec.com/ (at the bottom left corner click on "Symantec Security Check")


both those adresses have free only virus checking


So try this and then come back and keep us updated.


BTW Your computer most likelly port scanned the isp server or the isp detected an DOS attack from your computer: both signs of a virus infection.

i have the new Norton AntiVirus 9.0 for Macintosh and i have been calling Apple and they say that i can´t have a virus in my computer so i did call my provider and they gone look it up and call me back

well its true there are very few viruses for mac. Also since the new OS X is based on linux the only way a virus can really do harm is if you logged as Root(and i would hope apple did not make root login as standard).


But anyway what type of conection do you have? dial-up or broadband. If you are on broadband and have a static ip someone could have just spoofed your mac and ip adresses.

well even with dynamic its still posible someone spoofed you by changing they mac adress to yours and making their server think its you while its giving up IPs. Either that or as you said they made a mistake.


I do find your ISP rather impolite for threatening you that way though. That is not a proper way to treat a customer.

A lot of virus's are being designed to bypass detection by Norton Antivirus now. I would advise downloading the free version of AVG antivirus and also go here.... http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ This is a free online check, it will scan your computer and remove (providing you ask it to) any virus's. I scanned with this since all I had was Norton and it found 5 virus's and cleaned them out. I highly recommend it.
