New 1/4 times, what needs to improve?

I finally got to run my new Notch at the track with the new motor and rearend. If anyone wants to know the history of the car, there's a link in my sig to the progression of mods.

But anyway, I'm happy, but 100% satisfied with my times. Granted I have only been racing a manual tranny for two months now, and just learned how to powershift, which I did not do at the track though.

I got two runs in, here's their layouts.

..........First........Second
R/T .019-----------.225
60 2.196----------2.122
330 5.936---------5.764
1/8 8.965---------8.763
MPH 82.39--------83.86
1000 11.562------11.328
1/4 13.734--------13.491
MPH 104.19------104.46

The first run I ran 22 lbs on Nitto D/R's, but didn't heat them up. I feathered the clutch out of the hole, which kinda bogged it out. Also shifted at 5500 rpm.

Second run I ran 18 lbs in the tires, heated them up a little bit. Launched at 4k rpm, and it bogged to 3500 rpms. Shifted at 5800 rpm.

I was al set to run a third run with 16 pounds in the tires, a good burn out, 4500 rpm launch and shifting at 6000 rpms, but the rest of the night got rained out.

Anyway, what do you guys make of these times?

Re: New 1/4 times, what needs to improve?

If you are putting down enough power to run 104 mph in a RWD car, you should be able to nail 1.7-1.8s in the 60' which would promptly slam you into the 12s

Keep in mind that when you do a burnout you heat the tires up and your tire pressure increases.
I use 13-15 psi of cold tire pressure in my BFG drag radials.

As long as you havea good clutch, you may want to practice doing a quick slip of the clutch, not a dump. I pratically slip the clutch for almost all of 1st and I nail 1.7s often and a few 1.6s.

How heavy is your car?

Over all I would say your times are great, especially if you have not been driving manual for long

Re: New 1/4 times, what needs to improve?

Thanks, Jykle. People keep telling me that the 104 trap speed is good for 12's, I just have to practice my launching, which I find to be the hardest part.

My car weights about 3200 pounds with me in it, rough guess. I'm going to try to hit the track again this wednesday, see where I can improve.

3200 lbs .... time for a diet

I got Hyde down to 2840 with me in it.
He was over 3100 when I bought him.

Re: New 1/4 times, what needs to improve?

That was just a guess. Factory weight for my car is somehwere around 3000 lbs for a V8. Mine started life as a 4cyl which was a few hundred pounds lighter. It does not help that I weight 200 pounds. LOL

Re: New 1/4 times, what needs to improve?

They look pretty good to me man, but i'm not at all familiar with 1/4 times, or even 1/8th times for street cars. We race every weekend at a 330 ft. track, and about once a year or two at an 1/8th mile track.

I drove our car for the first time ever this weekend (only drove it once, but I'm eventually gonna drive it regularly). Its a 1972 Chevrolet Vega, with a 406 SBC (probably makes around 500-550 hp). Its a drag car, nothign street about it, but anyways, it usually averages 1.48 60 ft. times and mid 4.30s in 330 ft (about 85 mph or so-last time the MPH lights worked it ran 83.xx, but that was with high 4.40s and low 4.50s ets).

As for my first time ever driving, I ran a 4.589, had to get out of it at about 3/4s track, got out of the groove. I did have a .519 RT however (we go off a base .500 tree instead of .000) and we dont get 60 ft times anymore (lights are messed up), but it probably was about a 1.50 or 1.49. It was pretty awesome I know that, and I can't wait untill next weekend to drive it again!

Keep posting your times though man, I like reading what everybody else does. We're planning on going to an 1/8th mile track sooner or later, so maybe i'll have some times that more people are familiar with then just 330 ft ones!

It all sound's good to me. Do like you said and put in more track time. That way improvment's can be made.
I'm building a V/8 for my daughter. Her car to was a 4cyl.
It'll be good watching how your car run's so I can relate that to her.
Did you have any special problem's putting the V/8 in ?
What transmission are you using ?
I'm using a C4 in my daughter's. I don't think she has enough manul dexterity to drive a straight stick. (she's a blond)
