buying turbo 944, advice needed

hey i am looking around for a turbo 944 somewhere around the year 1986, i am looking to spend around $8,000 or less, is there a specific year i sould get? and how expensive is it to modify the engine up a few horses.

basicaly i am looking to get the best performance per cost, on a 944 turbo, anyone here have any suggestions?

Good luck, it can take months to find the right 951. I don't know how many are for sale out in Kansas, but I never see them here. 951 is definitely the way to go for the best "bang for the buck" A couple thousand $ can easily get you over 300 H.P. I'm not a turbo owner and don't know all that much about the exact mods, but from what I've seen the route many people have gone is: chips, boost controller, exhaust, MAF. I have a friend who got an '87 for $5500, but they got pretty lucky, I'd be looking to spend about 6500-8000 on the car.

Well, if you can get an '88 turbo S or '89 or later turbo, that would be best as they had higher hp (250 as opposed the the '86 - '88s 220) as well as a bit different suspension/brake components. However best bang for your buck will probably come from the '86s and '87s.

As far as mods go, you can add about 100 rwhp to these cars for about $3000, which is rather impressive...

Why do you have to get a turbo? A friend has an 1987 944 turbo and though he loves it, he says it the turbo doesn't really kick in until high speeds. He does a lot of racing and said that quite a few tracks won't allow turbo's.

I have a 1986 944. Non turbo. Believe me, for regular type of driving, it's more than enough car. And I don't just mean to work. I mean, on the thruways, back roads, etc... I've had that car running much faster that is legal or I probably should.

And, if something does happen, think how much more a turbo is gonna cost to repair.

You sound like me 1.5 months ago before I got to drive a 951...now I want one pretty bad.

For me it's really not a matter of top speed as much as it is how fast you get there and back down again. Sure a N/A can get up to pretty good speed, but when you can jump on it and and get to 90 in no time, that's where it's at! I've had my 951 up 155 mph and it's still pulling. I did that once and thought "I get caught and no more Porsche for me." They'd take it away at that speed.

I have heard that Turbos aren't allowed in some races (gee, I wonder why?). It is such an elegant way to gain horsepower without adding drag or weight. I guess it's an unfair advantage. Do you know if SCCA allows them?

Love those Turbos.

btw - I had a N/A before this 951, no comparison. Mines a bit modified for better handling and horsepower, but I'd still go Turbo over N/A any day.
