2000 Cougar Check Engine/Anti-Theft

I have a 2000 Cougar that has been pretty good to me up until tonight. My wife was driving the car and she saw the check engine light pop on. A couple of days ago it was on and yesterday it shut off. Well, it came back on today, and with a vengeance. She had to run some errands and came back to unlock the car remotely and the doors would not unlock. She unlocked the doors with the key...whoa, and she noticed that the lock/unlock buttons in the car didn't work at all either. Another thing she noticed was the anti-theft light stayed on continuously...it doesn't blink like it did before. Let me add one more thing, the worse part. When the check engine light and anti-theft light went on, she smelled something like burning plastic - that is never good. The car seems to run fine otherwise. Any ideas before I take it in?

Thanks
Aaron

Hello,

Jamie Shaw here. About your problem. It seems that you have two:

First: Your oxygen sensors have went out. Tell me this, have you noticed a power difference when you step on the gas around 20-25 mph? Your car will run okay other than that. If you don't drive like a mad person, then you'll be fine. If you go and have it checked out and it says "Catalytic Converter Below Threshold (Bank whatever)" or something like that, it's your O2 sensors.

Second: About the anti-theft thing. I would recommend jus buying an aftermarket alarm system. We sell them on our website:

ShawVisionAuto.citymaker. com

Also, have you tried to open your trunk using the trunk button located by the drivers kick panel? Let me guess, won't open? This has happened to alot of 99-02 Cougar owners. More in the 99-00 Cougars though. Just so you know, you aren't alone. Well I hope that this helps your problem, if you need anymore questions answered email us at; [email protected], later.

Re: 2000 Cougar Check Engine/Anti-Theft

as far as the check engine light coming on frequently and you know nothing is wrong with the engine, you might have to replace the computer in your car. that's what i had to do for my 99 cougar. it's an expensive part if that's the problem.
