Well, go get the March issue of Motor Trend, they finally confirm that the EVO VII will be coming at an expected 28-30 grand! Its on page 98-99)
The only changes will be to meet US regs (hopefully, that won't mandate a top-mount intercooler opposed to the front mount currently used) |

Yup, i just started looking through my Motor Trend that came today and stumbled upon this article. This is my favorite part:
"Mitsubishi has announced that its latest Evo, the Lancer Evolution VII is coming to the U.S. with its 300-plus-hp (don't believe the factory ratings cited below) turbocharged four, independent suspension, all-wheel drive, and big deck-mounted spoiler intact." Man i wish i had an extra $28-32K lyin around. |

E-mail from Mitsu dealer on US EVO
I just got an E-mail back from a Mitsubishi dealer in my area (San Jose, CA). He subscribes to our Bay area Talon/Eclipse news group which is how he got in touch with me.
Here it is, it starts at the bottom....so scroll to the bottom and read up. here's what i know so far.........arrival date is jan 2003, strictly 1 car per dealership, and a non negotiable cost of $40,000......output and specs, i don't currently have any info.... Matthew Bailey <[email protected]> wrote: Paul, Thanks for the reply, Do you have any gusses regarding the total number of EVO VII Mitsubishi expects to import into the US? I saw numbers for the WRX around 8000 units total production for 2001,not sure if it was accurate though. It looks like Mitsubishi mfg around the same number for the EVO. Do you have any info on specs like whats happening with the FMIC, or emissions, HP? Thanks, Matt ----- Original Message ----- From: paul brondial To: Matthew Bailey Sent: Thursday, January 31, 2002 8:32 AM Subject: Re: [bay-dsms] EVO VII info matthew.....the arrival of the evoVII will be delayed again till jan2003 and 1 car per dealership for now, i'm paul brondial and i currently work at courtesy mitsubishi in san jose in stevens creek |

what would be the purpose of only 1 car per dealership? i dunno, that just seems a little odd to me, and im not liking that 40K price tag rumor either.

Mitsubishi had a yellow Lancer Evo VII on display at the L.A. Auto Show in January. The sign said "Coming January 2003". It looks like the front mount intercooler will remain. They just moved it back a little. I snapped a couple photos, but I don't have a scanner. Even so, I'll try to get them up.
I'm really excited about the coming of the Lancer Evo, but I'm hesitant due to Mitsubishi's poor track record on dependability. But I suppose if it craps out on me I can always trade it in for a WRX STI(word is, the STI will be coming to the U.S. to compete with the Evo). |

Here is my guess at what will happen. The first shipment will be in limited numbers driving the price up. The more cars that come over here the more the price will drop. The price will be down to retail by early 2004. By then, the initial batch of cars sent over will be experiencing multiple maintence problems driving the average consumer away. I cant wait to see what consumer reports will have to say! They just loved the previous mitisubishi models!!! NOT! Hopefully by then the EVO VIII will be out. 100 lbs heavier, even smaller turbo for more low end torque and it will look like the Galant.

Come on 40 grand? I dont believe that.....you might as well go ahead and get a freakin skyline.....its not to much more....12-16 grand....compared to 40 thats not bad.......i'll never pay 40 grand for it..I dont think they will price that high.....they will terribly miss there audience and the car will be a failure....just my opinion
Not to mention you already can have a jdm spec one imported for that price.

Well, thats the E-mail quoted directly from the sales guy! There are a few factors I failed to mention though.
First and foremost, this is comming from a dealer in Silicon Valley. The most common car on the road here is the 3 and 5 series BMW. I see at least 2 360's each day that I bother to come to work. Sports cars sell in the Bay Area like hot cakes. In other words...the car is in demand for our area. Yeah he says one car per dealer, but that is typical for a first shipment. There should be more after that for 2003. They need to sell a certin number a year just to support the logistics of the dealer training/tools/parts inventory. The weather and the roads here are suited for the EVO. Fast and the Furious is only a year old, still grabbing interest out here. When the 2001 M3 came out the dealer that I talked to wanted $60000 + tax and extras. S2000's are still going over retail out here with 5000 miles on em. I doubt we will have much to worry about after a year or so if they bring over numbers similar to te wrx. Its a 30,000 small sports car! How many people wont buy it cause its an import? How many people wont buy it cause it a 4 cyl? How many people wont buy it based on Mitsubishis past history? Just some thoughts |

Oh...and when he said a non negotiable cost of $40,000, I beleive him. Just keep in mind he is speaking only for his dealership, not every dealership in the US.

EvoVII in Cali
I know this EvoVII. This car was built by welding together a stolen EvoVII in Japan on a 2001 Lancer. I race with him in SCCA racing. Very young rice boyz from a very wealthy family.
I also have a White EvoVI in Cali. It does haul ass and turn heads.

if they sell it for 40000, I'll wait for a few months; I doubt they'll sell it for that much, but we will have to wait and see.
Colorado roads (aside from their condition, which sucks) are excellent for EVO driving; I spoke to a gentleman who imported one so he could rally it. Our regs WOULD HAVE made him either destroy it or send it back after 12 months, but he wrangled a deal (or maybe because it's coming out for real) that will allow him to keep it. It's a white EVOVII RS, and I do have pictures. just need to get ahold of a scanner real quick and I'll post some pics. The wheels are cheddar, but this guy rallys it, so he's got some lame-ass wheels on it in the pics. |
