Looks like recent high winds blew something across my windshield, scratching it right in my forward sight line when driving. Can it be filled in somehow to render it invisible or almost? Polishing might create distortion.

Check with a reputable glass shop. Also many insurance companies have $50 deductible windshield replacement policies as part of your insurance. It doesn't have to be broken, just impairs your vision while driving.

I've seen polishing kits at auto parts stores. If it's enough to catch your fingernail, it probably can't be fixed, but otherwise you may be able to spiff it up.
