Vr4 Owners

at what mph does your 3rd gear top out at.

mine is 120-125. somewhere inbetween there.

just checking because i have got to at least 120mph in 3rd at least 5 times. but a cool guy in the street racing forum said that if my 3rd gear is at 125mph then technically my top speed is 215mph.

5 speeds max around 125 in 3rd, 6 speeds max around 115 in 3rd. And yes, your top speed would be around 210-215 in 5th gear at redline. But have fun trying to get there. Your peak power is closer to 6k. The only way you are touching the "redline" in 5th is with lots of mods, and by then the "redline" will probably be higher(7.5-8k).

Re: Vr4 Owners

my 3rd gear tops out at around that sort of speed, i have read before somewhere that it is almost possible to top speed in 4th gear but havent tried that dunno if its true altho i have reached the 150mph mark in 5th and shut down although it was still pulling. this was off road of course on a track.

well, you have to understand, the car will never make it to 235 without some SERIOUS power, Matt Monet is the only person i know that has done it, and he calculated his speed by his tachometer. Stock, the car will probably only get to about 165, but at 165, you will only be doing, lets say, about 4800ish rpms or somewhere along the lines. Its not that the car can go that fast, its just what the gears are geared to go to.

Yea but theoretical top speeds are kinda cool to calculate, I remember spending a whole day in calc in high school doing just that and a few other auto related calculations with everyones cars, we had an awsome teacher.

Edit: ohhand does anyone know where the gears redline on a base/SL? I've never realy payed attention to the speed and I have only redlined mine like 3 times so far and only through the first 3 gears.

can't really say what they would be on a manual, all i know is that the FWD manuals are geared short compared to the VR-4s, 5th gear redline is probably at like 170

ATX is a different story, for me:

1st-2nd shift around 45
2nd-3rd shift around 83
3rd-4th shift around 135 (and that long gear can pull too)
4th, will top out around 200 at redline
