radio problem

I have read the posts on the frequent radio problem. Complaints of popping noises heard while operating the jeep. My friend has the same problem, 1995 jeep. I installed a inline filter for him, but it did nothing for the problem. A few people have complaine of this after isntalling new spark plug wires (that are not factory recomended), but my friend did not out of the ordinary with his jeep.

one day he got in it and this problem shows up. This is the 4th radio he is on, all doing the same thing. New antenna & wire installed also!

Can anyone offer any suggestions, or help. Thanks!

PS- thanks in advance to all who answer help questions/offer advise and dont get thanked by those who ask.

Usually the static or popping noise in a radio is either the ingnition or the charging system.

to figure out which one, disable the charging system by removing the belt and running the engine for a few seconds to see if the noise is still there.

If the noise is gone, then a bad diode or maybe a winding inthe stator is the cause. sometimes the filter will take out the noise from a weak diode but it is better to have the system checked and repaired.

The noise can be induced into the reciever through the antenna or the dc wiring harness...disconnect the antenna and see if the noise goes away. Some times the RF is picked up by the close routing of different harnesses with the radio dc harness or to the antenna coax and a simple reroute will fix it.

A partial open in one of the plug wires can also induce the noise because of the higher voltage required to fire the plug - even without causing a noticable miss in the engine.
