I need to add transmission oil to my 93 1.9L manual shift escort.
(I inadvertently removed some nuts from the transaxle cover and oil leaked!) However, I can not locate the fill in plug. Does anyone know? |

Re: where's the tranmission oil fill plug for escort 93 Manual ?
you have to take the speedometer gear out and fill it through that hole. i guess you could follow the speedo cable from the firewall down to it. that will at least show you where it is. i had to get at it from underneath the car to remove the speedo gear. there should also be a retaining clip that holds the cable in place. oh, and be careful when you remove the cable and putting it back in. if you pull too hard the other end of the cable will come out of the instrument panel making your speedometer not work (at least thats what happened to me). to check the level of the fluid you have to insert the gear back in take it out and look at the gear. make sure that there is enough fluid to go almost to the top of the gear.
i hope this all makes sense! |

The 93 is just like my 92 wagon. The speedometer is the only way. Now, I had a mechanic ride it on ramps backwards and filled it with the drain plug, but I'm having tranny problems now, so yes the speedometer is your best bet. My 92-96 Haynes even says use the speedometer. It says when you pull it out, there is a gear at the end of it. The top of the grooves is the fill mark, the bottom is the add fluid mark, and if you see no fluid, I hope you haven't drove the car.
Check and change every 12,000 mi, or 12 Months. 1 Park the vehicle on level surface. Turn off engine. apply parking brake and block wheels. Open hood and locate the vehicle speed sensor at the transaxle. 2 clean around it. (to make it short) 3 Disconnect the electrical connector from the speed sensor. Remove the retaining clip and disconnect the speedometer cable. 4 Pry the speed sensor out of the transaxle and check thelubricant level (See illustrations). If necessary, add the specified fluid (MERCON Automatic transmission fluid) a little at a time, through the speed sensor hole. A funnel will help prevent spills. 5 inspect the speed sensor O-ring ad replace it if it is cut, cracked or broken. 6 Repeat steps 2-3 backwards to replace. |

Thanks everyone for the replies.
I checked the fluid by removing the speedometer assembly. Only messed up one thing. while removing the electrical connector, one of the clasps broke. it sill holds firm when i put it back. just a note of caution to anyone who attempts this. These things are frozen there and very little room to remove properly. |

yes, i removed the speedo cable first. then it is easier to yank that gear out.
i don't remember clearly how it looked like, but i do remember the white plastic gear wheel. if you go to the website of autozone, they have uploaded the chilton's guide and there is a picture of this this thing there. it is not a photo but a sketch of the gear. you can see it at http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBr...3d8015618c.jsp (make sure you copy and paste the entire link) |

Looks like Chilton leaves as much to be desired as Haynes, neither make any mention of an steering wheel lock or procedures to diagnose malfunctions. But thanks for the URL anyway.

The main reason I ask is that I took my old tranny and first tried on that....did not go so good as the plastic piece where the speedo plugs into pulled off completely and the the middle piece came out, leaving in the sprocket (plastic piece you talked about I assume) . . . oh well...mayby a tranny guy can do it for me.....

Re: where's the tranmission oil fill plug for escort 93 Manual ?
My Attemps failed too. However, I just thought of something. Make sure you unclip the electrical sensor, then there are 2 bolts hooked to what's left. take them out then pry that whole metal piece up. the gear should be under that. Manuals read on the sprockets and automatics read just above it.
I don't think pulling the cable off the gear hurts it if your careful about how you shove it back in there. I pulled my cable out too and shoved it back in and the speedometer works fine. Try it on yours and let me know, I'm not doing anything else to mine til I get the new body and tranny for my motor. (`91 Escort LX Pony 2-door w/5-speed) |

Re: where's the tranmission oil fill plug for escort 93 Manual ?
BTW daleb9: Far as I can tell, my stearing wheel doesn't lock til you turn it all the way to the right and turn the key all the way off, besides, you don't have to lock a stearing wheel to work on a Speedometer cable. And it all depends on which book you have. My Haynes Ford Escort & Mercury Tracer 1991-1996 all models book ( ISBN 1 56392 190 1, book 36020 (2046)) tells you how to use the EEC test or the Check engine light to troubleshoot anything the computer touches. Even tells you how to read the code it gives out and tells what that code is.
