86 GTi instrument panel problems

I have 2 problems. First, the odometer works intermittently. It will work for a while then stop then maybe start again a few days later. It is non-functional more often than not. Anyhow, the speedo still works fine, so I'm assuming that the problem is inside the assembly...before I go taking the dash apart, can I even get in there and look at it or is it all sealed? I'm thinking it might be a stripped gear or something. Anyone know of another possible cause?

Second, the little digital display between the speedo and tach no longer resets when the car has been turned off for a while. It's not that big of a deal, but it says that I've been driving for like 93 hours and the gas mileage never changes anymore because its the average of forever. Just wondering if there was a common problem that I could look for.

Re: 86 GTi instrument panel problems

There are some sites around that go into detail on the odometer gear repair, it's a very common problem. Try a Google search on it. Isn't there a few different modes you can put the MFA into, like a 1, 2 or non-resetting mode that varies which interval you are viewing? I don't use mine often, but if I can find my manual I'll try to check it out.

OK you got me on the different modes and being able to reset it manually. I have no excuse for that one...just never put one and one together I guess. So now I'm left with the odometer, which I wil probably try to take out this wekend and see what I can find.
