abs sensor replacement
I need to replace the abs sensors on a 92 astro. I was told that they are on the dust covers. I was wondering if it's an easy enough job for an amateur wanna be mechanic, and if there are any good websites with pictures and directions. thankyou.

Re: abs sensor replacement
I have a 1992 Safari and when the ABS light and brake light came on, we had the ABS disconnected. We were told that the problem would only come back and the lights would come back on. So instead of replacing sensors and ABS components, we took it to our mechanic and they disconnected it. It was a simple job. Just the snipping of a wire or two. No more lights, and no more ABS. You don't really need ABS anyway. It's just a luxury item so your brakes don't lock up on you when you slam the brake pedal. But if you've got good foot control and can drive, who needs ABS?

HOMEBOY - That is a little shortsighted. Why do you think ABS was created in the first place? Come on - don't dosomething like that! ABS eliminates that skid that causes out of control spinning and loss of vehicke manuevering. I suggest you reconect those wires and disconect the ABS unit (it is easier to disconnect than your battery!) and send it to Gavin Curtis at Circuit Solutions (WWW.circuitsolutions.info). For about $110, you can have them repair the unit and save $900. Come on Homeboy!

I hit a car from behind because of a faulty ABS Sensor. The thing mis read itself and I tapped a brand new VW. That lady was ticked. I just plain didnt stop in the room I had and I was full force on the brakes. On talk radio I hears a faulty brake sensor can kick in at 8 MPH make you stop slower. I want to disconnet mine. |

Re: abs sensor replacement
Listen, I have been running my 92 van without ABS for almost 10 years. No accidents, no problems. If you can drive well enough, you don't need abs. I have a 97 Dodge Ram 1500 with ABS and the ABS agravates the crap out of me sometimes. Why spend the money on getting something fixed that I don't absolutly need when I can do away with it for free?

Re: abs sensor replacement
I'm not sure what the best way to disconnect the ABS is. My mechanic did mine. From what I can tell, everything is still intact. All the sensors, ABS control computer, everything is still here. I think he just disconnected or clipped a couple of wires. I would find out first if I were you.
