96 lesabre wont start

It all started about 2 weeks ago... Went out one morning and the battery was dead. Put in new batt and she started right up. later that afternoon it wouldnt start again. removed battery cables at the battery and hooked them up again and it started. Ran fine for a few days. Then it wouldnt start again so unscrewed and retightened the cables again and started right up. Ran fine all day after messing with the cables. Then a few days later it required undoing the cables EVERY time we wanted to start it. About 3 days ago it died twice while driving it, but started right back up. The next day i couldnt get it to start for anything. Its been sitting since and i will get to tinker with it this afternoon. any suggestions? First thing i changed the posts since they looked corroded, did nothing.

Thanks
Nick

96 Lesabre wont start

I forgot to describe some of the other symptoms... It wont crank at all, and sometimes the spedometer needle will bounce around when the key is turned to start and nothing else happens. No clicks or any sounds from solenoids or the started, just the whir of the fuel pump.

Re: 96 Lesabre wont start

I had the same problem a few months back, occassionaly it would start fine, other times it was completely dead.
Turned out to be the starter. Picked up a reman starter/solenoid from autozone for around $50, install was a little tricky but she starts every time now.

I'd recommend checking your starter and make sure you're getting 12v, i had no indications from mine that it was 'going'... it just wouldn't start one day.

If you're getting 'some' juice out of the battery i would also check the alternator.

battery cables

Well, it turns out that it was the battery cables. They were verry corroded at the ends away from the battery and inside the insulation. Hopefully this is the only fix that it needs to keep this problem gone.
