Unhappy Hurricane ALex

UGH! Let me just start off by I really hate hurricanes. lol anyone else in the area gettin hit with this? The eye is still south of me but I'm gettin hit with some wicked heavy rain...the surf has been gettin rougher but the winds arent too bad yet i'd say. Weather channel says that they are ab 20 but I'm right on the ocean so I thinkt hey are up a little more but whatever...I know I'll be losing power as soon as it moves up lol...always happens. but anyways, any one else dealing with this crap?

I have to take a 14 hour drive to South Carolina tomorrow, so I think I'll be hitting it on the way. Kind of exciting.

na, you wont hit it tomorrow. its only a cat 2. it will be long gone before you get up in the morning. it'll either have dissapated or gone back out to sea to dissapate. only cats 3+ hang around. this is just the begining of the season...i wonder what mother has in store for the rest

Weaker storms actually last longer once they hit land because they consume so much less energy that they have a more of a tendency to remain organized once land hits. Strong storms will usually become disorganized more quickly. Almost like hot water freezing faster than cool water.

it depends a lot on what direction and where exactly it is "hangin" out. generally, from my experience, its the stronger ones that tend to effect land more because they stay right on the coast. they pick up their energy and such from the ocean there for they keep moving and fast at that. the weaker ones even when picking up energy and such from the ocean, make land fall and either break apart into individual storms therefore, no longer a hurricane/tropical storm/tropical depression. the stronger ones tend to stay hurricane/tropical storm/tropical depression's longer. everyone's got their opinion though

Re: Hurricane ALex

A storms intensity usually depends on its rate of speed. the bad ones are the ones that hang out for a while for the reason that they are barely moving. When I was little we had a weak tropical storm moving at like 30 mph hit baton rouge and dump like 12 inches of rain in like five hours. That same storm moving at 15 mph would have dumped 24 inches of rain based on that difference alone. Not to mention that a better organized(slower moving) storm will have much more intense rain in locations around and usually on the east side of the eye.

In reply, more damage from hurricanes occurs because of flooding and not because of wind. A good tropical storm can be much more devastating than a hurricane if it includes very heavy rain. People have a tendency to underestimate the ability of a tropical storm/depression moving at low speed to cause serious damage because they are usually moving much more quickly due to the fact that movement generally weakens hurricanes.
