Tamiya Spray Problem

I don't know WHAT is wrong. I used Tamiya spray red and yellow last year on a couple Integras, and they came out great! Now I'm trying a light green spray on the Eclipse and an orange on teh Supra, and the first time I used it yesterday, there were a few bubles. No big deal, I sanded them out, and repainted today. Now I spray another coat, and there's 10X as many bubles in the paint!? What happened?! Temperature 73 dgrees Farenheit and humidity 59%.

the humidity may have been to high. bubbling sounds like a humidity related problem. other possibilities: did you use primer?-if so what brand? how close were you when you applied the tamiya spray? how thick?

That humidity is usually fine for my Duplicolor Automotive sprays, may have been too much for the Tamita... I used Tamiya primer, so I'm guessing it's not a compatibility issue.


I applied it maybe 4-5 inches away, the first coat just enough to cover the primer, the second a little thicker.

73ºF 59% RH is just normal weather so it's not the problem

I've had the same type of problem...
It sounds like there may be some kind of foreign substance between the primer and paint. How long had the body sat with primer on it before you put paint on?
I suggest you lightly sand down the bubbled areas and respray.
Also, be sure there is no sanding dust left on the body when you respray! This may contribute to the contamination.

I've had this problem with Tamiya spray and it's caused by the paint gassing out after a skin has started to form over the top of the paint. I also found the same in that it happened with certain colours but not others.

If you follow some of the tips in this article your paint finish with Tamiya lacquers will improve, the mian thing that I now do every time using these paints is to warm the paint in hot water before spraying, not too hot though!! The extra heat in the paint helps the gas come off before the skin has formed and the paint smooths out to a gorgeous finish even before polishing. The other really important thing is to swirl the can upside down to mix it and NOT to shake it, this can put even more gas into the paint that will magnify the problem.
