406 Handbrake Problem

Hey all !

Got a 406 LX with an intermittant Handbrake problem (Electrics)

sometimes when then handbrake is applied when the car is stationary , I get the warning "Brake Fluid Level Low!" with the beeper

and of course the fluid was only changes 2000 miles ago on a major service , where the brakes were checked too !

so I bought myself the Haynes manual for my car and found that there are 2 switches (one for handbrake and the other for Brake fluid level) that are completely separate from each other and only connect together into a larger connector but I cannot find where this (possibly controller) is in the car.

Peugeot have themselves not been able to find the cause of this .

they say there is no problem with the handbrake !

Can someone please help !

Re: 406 Handbrake Problem

Hi, did you manage to find out what the problem was with the "brake fluid level low" warning light. I have a Peugeot 406 and am having the identical problem. It seems to be weather dependent i.e. it seems to be less of a problem in the colder months. Any information you have would be greatly received. Kind Regards

Yeah the handbrake switch is faulty, this throws up the "brake level light low" light on the display.
It's a small L shaped black switch behind the rear ashtray/compartment,you'll need to lift up the compartment enough to get your hands under to replace the switch.
This is a common fault with these switches,so a peugeot dealer should have the part.
There ya go....good luck!

p.s-you did check the brake fluid level right?
