66 coupe windsor swap

I'm looking at a 1966 mustang coupe. 200 I6 auto car. I'm building a 351w and C6 that I want to swap into one. I know I will have to make some mods to the shock towers to fit the wider 351 in there with a good set of LT's. But, how much room should I allow for on each side and are there kits for this modification? Also will I have any trouble fitting the tranny in there? Thanks.

I think the Mustang II front end kits eliminate the shock towers. Pretty sure anyway, never done it myself. Kinda expensive but it gives you the five lugs you need, disc brakes you need, and extra space for the larger engine. I dont know about the trasmission.

Re: 66 coupe windsor swap

I am not 100% sure but I believe that the 351 windsor will fit without modifying the shock towers, if conversion headers are used (Assuming that your shock towers haven't sagged inward over the years). The 351 Cleveland will not fit ( i have have a '66 and a unused Cleveland that i wanted to put together) it is simply too large without using the Mustang II front suspension which is somewhere around $1700. The trouble that you may have for the tranny is getting headers to fit around it in that tight space. I am pretty sure that you will need conversion headers for this swap. Check out Mustangs Unlimited for these http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/Sub...yWords=headers
Good luck and I hope this helps

Re: 66 coupe windsor swap

I found some Hooker Super Comps for 66-70 cars with a 351w and C-6 swap. Hope I dont have to port-a-power the shock towers back apart. I think there is supposed to be 44" from inner finder to inner fender. Now my question is the tranny tunnel? Will I have to do any mods there?

If you have the v8 saddles the 351w will drop in. The i6 saddles are different. You can buy the v8 saddles from Mustang Unlimited. The trans tunnel is the same from 65-70. But you will need the C6 trans cross member from an older 68-70 mustang. I dont know of any one selleng them right now.You should be able to place a jack in the middle of your front end under the tube cross brace and lift it up which may spread the towers apart enough to get the brace in.But if you towers are bent to bad get the poat-a-power out.
