intrepid tranny pros

94 intrepid, 3.5, was running great, next minute it doesnt want to shift 2nd to 3rd, and when going uphill, its hard to get it over 15mph, not sure if its all in the tranny but like i said 10 minutes before it started acting up it ran great, is there any modules, ect that may be bad rather han the whole tranny being out? please give me some ideas of what to check, dont wanna spend much, dont wanna replace tranny, thanks

any way of checking trouble codes with out a machine? ya know like how on a gm you can use a paper clip, if so, where can i get a site or list of codes and info on doing so, need this asap, im off work till i can figure this out, thanks again

If there are any sensors bad the check engine should come on. How many miles and has the tranny ever been flushed. I used to have a 96, the tranny went at 130k but I know people who lost theirs at like 30-40k.

it has 140 on it, never been flushed as far as i know, my g'f has put 40,000 since shes owned it, but it ran great one minute, then messed up the next, she delivers pizza in it, so yes a lot of stop and go, but she been driving this car for a year delivering with not not one single problem, i had a sensor go out on my explorer without the cel coming on? how can i trip the codes with out a machine? papper clip work on these?

with Chrysler vehicles prior to 96, try turning the key to on/off 3 times. on the third time, see how many times the check engine light flashes. Prime example, if it flashes once, then waits a few seconds then flashes twice, you have a trouble code 12. I know a few codes off hand, like if you get a code 15, it's a speed sensor. In your case, if it's not shifting out of 2nd gear, the transmission is in default mode. It has detected an electrical failure within the transmission control module, wiring, sensor, or solenoid assembly. If you still are unsuccessful in pulling the trouble code yourself, go to a shop that can pull up the trouble code on a scanner and go from there.

just tried it and the only code it has is 55-end of message if im correct

I just remembered that your car is a 94. It is pre-OBD II diagnostics capability. What you are going to have to do is take it to a repair shop and have them tap directly to the transmission control module. There's a blue plug (usually inside the fuse box area or on the bottom of the dashboard near the parking brake pedal) that Chrysler used with the original A-604 transmissions. Unfortunately, there's no way for you to pull up the codes yourself. If you didn't get any codes from the engine, my best guess is that the problem could lie in the transmission control module itself gone bad, the solenoid assembly or worst case scenario, the transmission has pulled itself apart and will require it to be rebuilt. First thing you should do is take it to a repair shop that can plug into pre-OBD II (on board diagnostics) transmission diagnostics for Chrylser vehicles.

its not the tranny, or theres 2 problems, b4cause if its in park, rev it to 3000, it starts bogging horribly, like its flooded, smokes alittle also, no water in the oil so i doubt it the head gasket, and seems to have a good flow out the back so i doubt its the cat

sounds like you have a few other things going screwy on you. At first, I thought it was and EGR valve, but that would have popped a check engine light. The next clue it might be is your fuel pump is getting weak. The best way to tell if it's that, pull the fuel pump relay from the power distribution center, if you have an ohmmeter, test the resistance of the circuit if it's more that 15 ohms, you have a bad fuel pump. Also, when you turn the key on, see if you hear a humming sound from the back of the car. If you don't hear the humming sound, your fuel pump is trash. My best bet is that your fuel pump is starting to go.

i have one of those volt meter multi meter things,a know? a it ran great one minute, then like crapthe next, is there a diagram of where the relay is and how exactl to check it? thanks for the help man i appreciate it

When you open your hood, look on the driver side fender and you'll see a black box. Open that box and read the inside cover to find where exactly the relay is. On the relay itself, you'll see something saying 85, 87a, 86, 87, 30. Those are the different terminals on the relay where it connects to the circuit. Put the ohmmeter on terminals 30 and 87. Test your ohms and if they exceed 15 ohms, you have a bad pump. Let me know how things go.

so take the relay out, then which terminals go where? can i do it with a multi voltmeter thing? not sure if it shows ohms?

it's best to try it with the ohmmeter, you'll get accurate results that way. look on the relay for the 5 terminals and it should say like 85, 86, 87, 87a, and 30
