91 Lesabre A/C recharge question

I bought a 91 lesabre recently, and the A/C blows warm. I've got an R-12 can tap and recharge kit, but do not have R-12 yet, but know how/where to get some.

My question is, how much do I need to buy? Will 1 12-14oz can do it? How about R-12 system oil? Do I need to buy a separate can of that too?

This is my 1st "do it yourself" A/C work, so any constructive advice will help.

Thanks

R12 is no longer for sale in stores. The production of it was banned several years back because it is an ozone depleting refrigerant. The only supply of it that is left is what has been stockpiled by manufacturers and service shops, as well is what is still in automobiles. If you want to stay with the r12, you will have to take it to a shop that is capable of recharging an r12 system. Due to the fact that it is no longer produced, it will probably cost around $75/pound plus whatever they charge for labor. If you have a very leaky system, you will have to have it recharged every year making your wallet not so happy. If you want to keep the car for several more years, i would retrofit the A/C system to R134a, a much much cheaper and ozone friendly refrigerant. If you have done some basic auto work, this is not that difficult to do. I did it on my lesabre and it cost me around 100 bucks total. if you want i can go into detail about performing the retrofit. in the mean time, enjoy your 4-60 A/C ( 4 windows down at 60 miles an hour lol)

Re: 91 Lesabre A/C recharge question

how about the R12 alternatives - Freeze12, R12a, others.

Anyone have any input on these?

They preach alot of good things, but I haven't heard much from users yet.

I do not plan on keeping the car for more than a year, maybe through the winter. I do need AC for the remainder of the summer and for the defog in the winter.
