Making A Beast of a Freeway car
I' m sorry to bug you guys again, but something is really bugging me. I have always wanted to have a high speed sports car, and my 3kGT SL has been doing that fine for me. I was thinking of upgrading to a VR4 but I have heard from others that the drivetrain loss is too much on the freeway. I was thinking that the extra 100hp would sort of make up for that but I wanted to check with you guys...the ones with first hand experience. I don't have trouble with my SL hitting triple digits when I need to, i hope it is the same way with VR4's. Do you guys have trouble with drive train loss from highspeeds? I guess this is kinda a stupid question and all, but I was just wonding what would be a better platform to build a speed king out off. Would a few drivetrain mods help with the drivetrain loss such as a perfromance clutch, lightened driveshaft, and lightened flywheel help. Just to let you know I am talking about mostly 91-93 gen 3000Gt's as mine is a 91 SL, and the Vr4 I am looking at is also a 91. Thanks for the help

Re: Making A Beast of a Freeway car
a vr-4 will be faster than an N/A even with the drivetrain loss in any fields. However i do know of a guy on 3si.org who is challenging a vr-4 with his base with mods and nitrous from a roll.
I will always advise people looking for more speed to check out the twin turbo conversion to do on their n/a because it would quicken you up quite a bit and you'd still be able to keep a sleeper status among everyone else. A vr-4 upgrade is the overall best choice but if you have time, look into the tt conversion if your looking to have a beast |

Re: Making A Beast of a Freeway car
I don't think the drivetrain loss is noticeable...I've raced plenty of RWD v8s on the highway and it's always been interesting. Yes a supra or LS1 should start pulling on the vr4 at higher speeds...but my vr4 still hits 160 and it gets there damn fast. Get a boost controller on your vr4 and a few other boltons and you will have a beast of a street machine and highway car.

Re: Making A Beast of a Freeway car
Getting a VR4 would be sweet. I pass by a 1st gen VR4 every Sunday on my way home from church. One day I'm gonna get outta my car and yell "who's car is this???"

VR-4s go into the 160s stock. Also, gearing on VR-4s are unreal, especially compared to an N/A. A 2nd gen VR-4 is geared to about 230 mph, of course you gotta have the power to get there. Increasing your power, adding new turbos will help increase that top speed. The VR-4 is a very controlable car at high speeds.

Re: Making A Beast of a Freeway car
I'm not sure if this helps but I used to drive to Tucson from Boulder in a 91 TT With a CB and a radar dector I could average 120mph for 2+ hours and the faster I'd go the better my gas milage.

Re: Making A Beast of a Freeway car
I have major thrill issues...hehe. Anyways nice job on the NSX kill YoungVr4. There are about 3 of them here in my little town. Also there are a few NA supras and one TT supra and TT 300ZX, but they are both automatic...what a pity. The NA supras aren't a problem in my SL, but I am planning to get a VR4 to run with the Big Boys. One guy is thinking about putting a turbo kit on his NA supra and going against a VR4 if I get one. I was wondering how the 1st gen VR4's do on freeway rolls. Judging by the NSX kill, they do pretty well. I am just looking for something with top end. I know a VR4 can break 160, but is the 1st gen's gearing enough to pull hard till 180 or so, not saying I'm planning on going that fast though
hehe Thanks for the input.
