bad gas mileage for jeep

hey guys whats up? I dont have a jeep at all but my mother does and she seems to be getting bad gas mileage than her v8 suv. I checked the air filter and it seems a little dirty but not extreme. She has a stock jeep. Does anyone have any suggestions because i am completely clueless when it comes to jeeps. thanks a lot!

Re: bad gas mileage for jeep

Is it auto or manual? And what's the size on the tires? If she went bigger then that could contribute. What mileage is she getting?

Re: bad gas mileage for jeep

its an auto...(not as good as mileage on the manual) im not sure on the mileage...maybe like 15 miles or less and a full quarter of the tank. its the same size as stock....whatever jeep puts on there. so it may not have to do with the fuel/ air system?

Re: bad gas mileage for jeep

15 mpg for an auto around town might not be so bad, especially if there's alot of idling at red lights. In an 02 got about 17 in town and 23 highway. I'm sure a good tune up would benefit

Re: bad gas mileage for jeep

Is the idle running O.K. I just blew my throttle control sensor and caused my idle to run high and was getting poor gas mileage. Cost 70$ for part, check it out.

Re: bad gas mileage for jeep

Try taking the negative battery cable off and this should reset it.

Try starting a new thread, you'll get more attention and responses. Blair's right, take the negative cable off and hold it on the positive cable for 15 secs or so. If the maintenance required light comes on again after you reset it, you'll want to do some checking on the Jeep.

4.0 gas mileage

My '98 4.0 Grand Cherokee w/automatic only gets 14-15 around town, over 20 on open road when cruising. I don't think you have a problem. My '93 Wrangler 4.0 w/manual only gets slightly better around town. Tuneups are always a good idea but don't expect much of a mpg improvement. Nobody I know buys a Jeep for the gas mileage anyway you buy it for the fun!

Sounds like it's running good. I have a 97 4cyl with a manual trans and it never got more than 18 mpg in town and 20 mpg on the highway. They use the fuel but they sure are fun.

Re: bad gas mileage for jeep

hey mike, take it to an autoparts store and they should be able to reset it. as for the sahara's mileage, its probably just because it's a jeep. I have a 97 4cyl w/ a manual tranny just like bopdj and i get 16 in town (size 245 tires). these things have the aerodynamics of a brick too so that doesnt help either.
