Flames from Tailpipe...

Heres a question that im sure some of you will razz me about. I konws its kinda silly...but here it goes. What makes the flames come out of the tailpipe on some cars? Is it dangerous? Is it legal And any other flame related questions...

Thanks for your help. I just find it fascinating that a car can shoot 1 to 2 foot flames from its tailpipe...maybe other feel its stupid...but as a guy...when you add fire (1 cool element) to cars (another very cool element) it just makes it all the better. Makes your car look like one bad mother...shutcho mouth....

Damn you F&F!

It's all good. The flames occur when your air/fuel mixture is too rich (extremely rich). If you ever watch road races/autocross on SpeedVision, you'll probably notice flames coming out the pipes of some cars when they downshift around a corner or something. Or... Tokyo Extreme Racer Zero... that game has cars that spit flames when they downshift. But yes... it's caused by a rich air/fuel mixture.

True everyone was right...But, the way I read the question was he wanted to know how to do it himself. I could be wrong though. It wouldn't be a first..:bandit:

that happened to my friend, it was pretty ugly....his cat was so backed up, it was sick, we were riding home from a show and someone complimented his flames, we were like ummmm ok. Then we get to a gas station I stand out their and he takes off, flames about 4 inchs come flying out, it was nuts, we went 45 the whole way home, his car was idling at about 2,400rpm's.

Question

Nice story... But if the cat was sooooo clogged up, how the hell did anything(especially flames) pass through the clogged cat?

there is some company that you can buy systems for your car to shoot flames out of your tailpipe. i can't remember the name something line dragon fire or spitfire or something like that, i saw an ad in sport compact car last year (it has the new 300z on the front) i'll have to look it up. they cost like $700. that's re-dic-u-los. i guess at some car shows they have competitions to see who can make the biggest flames.

i would like to know how to hook up a sparkplug in my exhaust to do it when i wanted. would you have to make your air/fuel mixture rich to do it?

i was driving through kansas city one night and passed this guy on the hiway with a tricked out porche carrera and when i drove up beside him his car shot out blue flames like 8-12 inches out his dual exhaust. it was awesome.

Yes i would like to know how they did that too. I am curious to know how the whole spark plug thing works. I have heard about it before but i never really took it for anything causei thought the guy was messin with me. But how would you get the spark plug to stay in your tailpipe? And couldnt the flames go back in to your engine and blow it up? Much like the affect of lighting a spraycan for too long?
