Car smokes
I just installed a remanufactored long block in a 1996 Camry. The engine is a 2.2 liter 5SFE. The engine I took out had blow by & was using 3 qts. of oil a week. This new engine smokes when you sit & idle for a couple minutes. When you accelerate it puts out a big puff of smoke. The engine seems to build up internal pressure like the PCV valve isn't working. But PCV is new. Vacuum to intake is not plugged. Baffle in valve cover isn't plugged.Have head back off to local machine shop & valves seals are good. Engine has 140 t0 150 PSI compression in each cylinder. If you vent the valve cover through the oil fill cap the engine does not smoke.Pre-Catalytic & cataltic are also good.No codes are showing. Engine runs fine & has good power. I am stumped! Looking for help

Re: Car smokes
Does the PCV valve have suction when the engine is running? Does it hiss and try to suck your finger into it?

Re: Car smokes
Yes the PCV valve has suction. I disconnected the PCV from the valve cover while the engine was running. The cars idle started to oscillate up & down. And as I remember the thing started putting out a bunch of smoke

Re: Car smokes
Maybe this is normal for the 4-cylinder engine, but your cat converter is trashed. It is possible that with everything working correctly, the engine smokes a little like you see, but the C/C burns up the smoke and you never see it. Maybe your previous engine trashed the C/C with the oil burning. Codes may not show this problem.
It is also possible your PCV system isn't pulling what it should, again because of your previous engine. Did you put a new PCV hose on it? Although the system isn't plugged, it may be partially plugged and not scavenging as well as it ought to. Maybe it would help if you cleaned or replaced everything in the system that you are able to... Related to this, have you checked the Intake manifold vacuum at idle? Might not be pulling like it ought to because of a vacuum leak or idle control system problem. Running rich? Sorry, just guessing. See if anything rings a bell with you. |

Re: Car smokes
Well since I first posted I have changed the Pre-cat.It didn't seem to help much. But, it looked to be plugged. Yesterday I took the cat off the car & drove it. It smoked some . But not like it did with the cat on. Maybe with the new cat I have ordered it will burn up that amount of smoke. I have also changed the PCV valve & hose. The intake & vacuum lines were also cleaned out when I changed the engine. I have a bunch of spare parts. So if the new cat don't fix the problem I am going to changed the Intake manifold. Maybe it has a hairline crack. Also I rebuilt & cleaned the throttle body. Thought it might have a problem. Now you see why I am stumped. I thought I was missing something. Thanks
