1989 ranger transmission leak
I have A4LD transmission, it leaks transmition fluid from the bell housing when the truck is parked with the front-end down hill. I have checked the fill tube>not the problem. I have been told it may be the front pump seal and I am seeking a few more opinions before I drop the transmition. I use the Haynes Repair Manual, is there a better maual? Thanks for the help.

Re: 1989 ranger transmission leak
I just finished replacing an A4LD in my explorer. If the leak is coming from inside the converter housing then there's only one place it can come from, The front seal. Unless the converter is cracked, in which case you'd have more problems then just a leak. Once the trans has been removed replacing the seal is simple and inexpensive, although I wouldn't go through the trouble of removing an A4LD without rebuilding it. They're not good for much better then 150,000 miles in most cases and it's alot of work to do twice. Either way you would be foolish not to at least replace the converter while you have it out. They are also not so reliable!
I have an A4LD trans manual I purchased for $15 on e-bay. I wouldn't do more then removal and install without one. Thier's alot of detailed info that a normal ranger manual doesn't cover. If your only going to replace the seal and converter you'll be fine with the Haynes manual. Also it's very important to get a couple cans of transmission line cleaner to flush the lines before you reinstall! |
