Installing A Fabricated Intercooler

HEY THERE. I REALLY WOULD LIKE TO INSTALL AN INTERCOOLER IN MY 00 GTP BUT I THINK $1200-$2400 IS AN ABSOLUTLEY REDICULOUS PRICE. THIS MAY SOUND REALLY STRANGE BUT I THINK THIS MIGHT BE POSSIBLE- WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE TO FABRICATE AN INTERCOOLER FROM AN SC THUNDERBIRD OR XR-7 COUGER TO FIT IN OUR CARS, OR IF NOT POSSIBLE (DUE TO SIZE) WHAT ABOUT INSTALLING A SMALLER INTERCOOLER FROM SAY A MCLAREN GRAND PRIX, CHRYSLER LEBARON, TALON ETC. AN INTERCOOLER IS AN INTERCOOLER (THE INTERCOOLERS FROM THE 4 BANGERS MAY NOT REDUCE INCOMMING TEMP AS MUCH PER SAY). IF ANYONE HAS ANY KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THIS POST WHATEVER IDEAS OR THOUGHTS OR E-MAIL ME [email protected] .I'VE TRIED SEARCHING THE NET FOR ANY IDEAS BUT HAVE COME UP WITH NOTHING. THANKS ALOT EVRYBODY

Re: Installing A Fabricated Intercooler

I dont think the four banger inttercoolers would work. THe intercooler cools the are after it has been compressed by a forced induction. On the turbo 4s the intercooler goes from the tubo to the intake. So to cool the are between our superchargers and the manifold the inter cooler has to be place between the two.

Well all the intercoolers you mention are air-to-air ICs...the ones available for your GP are air-to-water ICs.

Is it possible...I saw pictures of two air-to-air ICs for a 3800SC, one from Australia (although this was RWD) and one from Canada. The Canadian one was only in the fabrication stage and never heard anything about that one running.

Is it probable...only if you have some mad fabrication skills. The SC T-Bird/XR7 has the Supercharger mounted upside down, so the exit is on top. That is routed to the intercooler then fed back to the intake manifold.

Also have you seen what pre-fab air-to-air IC kits (big enough to be effective above stock boost) cost?? Heck the air-to-water ICs for the GP aren't that bad.

You'll find a bunch of these if you look on Google

It's not the IC that's the problem for the 3800SC...it's getting the boosted output of the blower to the intercooler and back to the intake. The blower is bolted directly to the intake manifold...as are most roots type blower setups. Some kind of custom layout would have to be fabricated and/or someway to mount the blower in a different orientation or location.

The aftermarket for the GTP/GS solved that by going to a air-to-water intercoooler and sandwiching it inbetween the blower and intake manifold...thus only raising the blower a few inches. Fluid is fed thru the intercooler to cool the boosted intake charge...the fluid is then pumped to a front mounted radiator to cool the fluid and fed back to the intercooler.

This is different from an Air-to-air intercooler that routes the boosted intake charge to the intercooler that is mounted in front of the radiator...cooling the intake charge directly...then routes the intake charge back to the intake manifold.

It's the layout that's the problem...
