82 Celica vibrating
i got a 82 celica gt for a gift.....with 230k miles on it...nice gift eh?
well it ran just fine the first 2 weeks i had it...then i adjusted the idle and timing to where its suppose to be....ran fine.. then about a week later on my way home from work it started making a growl low rumble noise, and vibrating like a mofo...so bad i cant listen to CDs... it only does this after reaching 45mph...then worsens at 60-65...then smooths out at 75.... me and my borther jacked it up and took a look at the driveshaft...the u-joints are cool, but when you grab the shaft you can shake it a little... he thinks its the center bearing on the drivshaft causing the problems... but also... i noticed on the transmission mount (?) where the first u-joint is, ya know the bracket with four bolts and a round thing in the middle with a piece of rubber around it....well the rubber fell off...im guessing its the trans mount, looks like one... but all the pictures ive seen of the trans mount (online) it doesnt quite look the same.... the vibration is pretty bad, and feels like its getting worse, so i need to fix it. any ideas? is it the trans mount? drive shaft? both? and as for the center bearing, if it does need replacing they are like 100$.... and i really dont want to spend 100 on parts for a car with 230k miles on it...think i could nab one from a pick n pull? or go with a new one? thanks! |

Re: 82 Celica vibrating
Yow it might honestly be that transmission mount that's screwing you over, then again is your driveshaft still balanced? That would be a good candidate for vibrations at only certain speeds! Then you have your differential it self....the pinion gear might beworn (espically for it's age) or your fluid might have been comtaminated, or just one of your 2 bearings (ball or neddle) might be bad, and if it is check that shit out....I think that's what it really is! If you have to replace it spend the money! Do it! Because the trouble of getting one out of a junk yard and then pulling yours out, putting the other one on only to find out that it's messed up to! would be a waste of time!

ok...more to add....
when cruising at the speeds at which it vibrates, if i press in the clutch they go away, completly...and drives like it should...if i stick it in neutral they go away aswell, but not 100% like just having the clutch in. so if i can push in the clutch and the vibrations go away, its not the driveshaft, right? since the driveshaft is always spinning as long as im moving... ? right ? which has me thinkin tranny mount or something worse. |

Re: 82 Celica vibrating
Okay....that's kinda nice (not!) okay so you've gotten these two new points that MIGHT elimanate the drive shaft.....but what you're also saying is that it only does it when torque is applied to the driveshaft!? Right? Because with the clutch disengaged, there is no torque going to the drive shaft and at the same time no noise. I would not even think of a tranny mount anymore that much because it should keep making the noise and vibrations as well at the speed given....so what could it be?
It only happens at a certain speed with torque applied. Could it be a warped clutch assembly (disk or flywheel). Or your gear box might have something to do with it since it dosen't happen in neutral as well. What about your out put shaft bearings being fucked up in a way that when the shaft turns at a certain speed it vibrates and makes the noise, so when the clutch is released there is no turning power going to it and it dosen't spin, and when in neutral the reverse idler gear spins and not your output shaft! So that's a good one. |

Re: 82 Celica vibrating
How did you check u joints?
Either way the mount seems likely with your description. The engine will hold tranny, but without the mount, but torque and vibrations will cause it to bounce. Possible front u joint seizure or center bearing failure would cause vibration at tranny under different load and speed. Maybe jam piece of tire rubber/wood or something similar in mount to simulate a mount and reduce vibration noise as a test. Also check mount bolts to see if they are loose. Vibrations wiggle everything out on these cars. Junkyard is fine for bearing. Pull off your old one spin it and see how it feels. Do same at junkyard if needed, obviously look for low mileage. At 230 my guess is all u joints, center bearing and rear wheel bearings could stand to be replaced. My 81 has 190k and all these have gone and been replaced except the center bearing and front u joint. They were half frozen or really rough. I haven't checked those yet but the front u joint is also almost definitely shot. Go with what you see, it is most likely correct. Good to hear from older Celica owners. Feel free to post back here or put the year of your Celica in thread title. I have fixed almost everything, I hope, on mine. Was my daily driver till 3 years ago and I still drive it. Best of luck. |

ok thanks guys... im gonna talk it over with my brother and we'll see what i replace from there. i will let ya know...
its a 1982 GT... 22R engine i believe... not a bad little car...and its in great condition, other than this problem....no dents/dings, and the interior is great minus the dash, but theres a dash mat now so... actually there is one more thing... the speedo squeeks...sounds like a bird... think its loose or needs replacing?

That's a nice looking 82 Celica. It has the special two tone paint package. Nice gift!
You can fix the speedo noise by taking it off and out and spray white lithium grease, graphite, or something else on it. Let us know about the vibration. It could be a number of things. BTW, 82-85 Celica U-Joints are staked-in and may or may not be replaceable depending on your balls Check this thread for more info: http://66.223.106.32/celicaforums/in...showtopic=2662 |

Re: 82 Celica vibrating

now i can probably go to pick n pull but then ill just be getting parts off a car with more than likly the same if not more miles on it that has been sitting there for who knows how long....then...it could still be unbalanced, right? |

Re: 82 Celica vibrating
all fixed.
i went ahead and got the entire shaft replacement. thanks Culpeper for the link. thats where i got the shaft from. took 2 days to get here regular ground. and it only took me 15 minutes to switch out the old and install the new. the car drives sooooo smooth now its unbelievable. i decided just to fork out the cash for a new one. didnt want to install old half dead parts to have this happen again in a few months, ya know. as for the $$ , arent we all strapped for cash? after all it is the american way of life. isnt it? i happened to have some extra $$ come in right around when i needed it so it wasnt tooo bad. anyways i am very please with it. runs great. now i hope thats the last thing i need to reaplace for a while. only time will tell. |

That's outstanding. When it comes to UJoints it is almost not worth the trouble to save money and get a used one out of a junk yard. First, you have to find one with low miles but that doesn't matter because the ujoints are now over 20 years old and dried up. At best you will reduce/eliminate the vibration but you will have a noisey ride and the ujoints will fail prematurely and you are back where you started. The only way to go is to replace everything along the driveline with a rebuilt one along with the center bearing. No different than replacing a water pump.

Hello all
I just had to join this forum after reading you discussion on the 82 celica gt. ive been looking everywhere for people who know about this car, as the parts are near impossible to find and sports mods even harder. i recently bought an 82 celica xt at the moment im just getting it all sorted, new carbi, alternator, engine rebuild, new exhaust manifold. to get it running like new. the engine is good, only 180000kilometres onthe clock (bout 111834 miles) and i want to do it up cause its a beautiful car. and i was wandering where 2 begin and whats the best way 2 do it.
eagerly awaiting your reply, thank you. tony |
