Gas Gauge Issues

My 2000 Ford Contour Sport has a faulty gas gauge. It used to work fine when I bought it through a private dealer. About 4 months later, I was stunned when I ran out of gas, but the needle was at 1/4 tank. And, it's seems to be getting worse. Now it's almost out of gas by 1/2 tank. Unfortunately, the warranty ran out on it several months ago.

I was wondering if any of you have heard of or had this problem??
