similar prob here

my 91 engine surges when I put it in neutral(5 speed). When I put the brake on, then it continues to surge only for about 20 seconds, but it goes up and down and up and down, till it idles normally. Doesn't HAVE to be fixed in order to keep running, but sometimes it just drives ya nuts.
I've visited some shops and they want to do a computer diagnostic check, which will set me back $60-70. If I can't find any usefull info here, I may have to do that.

Does your metro have an IAC solenoid? Some do, some don't. Sounds like yours has one, and it's faulty.

Re: surge update (not fixed)

Rud: Check your map sensor. A workmate in here had a similar problem with his Hyundai Elantra, after he spent a lot of money checking the rest of the stuff, he figured out it was some humidity inside the map sensor. So, he opened it, dried it out, put it back and deep it into silicone to get it impermeable again. That was 1+ year ago. No problems since then.

Hope this helps you out pal, your surge problem is now an everybody in the forum concern!

i will check it. do you just lift the top off? not really sure what you mean. i now believe that it is an electrical problem (like loose wire, etc) because whenever i hit a bump or something it will do it, like something ain't catching or whatever. i'll admit, i am being slow and lazy as far as fixing it because i can't find the time to do so. i will this weekend though. i appreciate all of your guys inputs....we will get her fixed some day!! lol

Re: surge update (not fixed)

Rud:
As far as I know, map sensor comes hermetically closed. I asked my workmate what exactly he did. He told me he just remove the cover using a knife, dry it out with a hair blower and closed it back using some sillicone. Also, told me not to remove the gel it has inside.

Geez! Well.. after all that, i would recommend to do all that work just if it is estrictly necessary.

Hope this helps.

that does sound like a nice amount of work!! whew!! i plan on quit being lazy and get to diagnosing it this weekend. i'm going to do a "wiggle" test at various sensors while the motor is running and see if that shows anything (it surges if i hit a large bump)....i think it is either a wire or sensor that is getting lazy, because when i let of throttle and pick it back up, it surges (almost as if the reading is still dropping as i pick up throttle *cough* *cough* TPS??? lol i will also check the MAP too....i definitely learned now how to possibly fix a MAP...i really appreciate input MC thanks

Re: surge update (not fixed)

Holy cow - I fixed it!
There is a part called the 'silencer' that is attacked via a hose to the air filter cover. Just put a piece of tape over the hole and WHAM - no more surging!
This silencer attaches, via another hose, to the Idle Control device.
