Just raced my 97GT in the quater mile

Hello, Im new to the forums and I just raced my 97'

I raced it at our local drag racing track just to see what it could do and I was tired of everyone ragging on my 4dr car being a slow ass beast. I took one of my friends along for kicks and we went to the track. I asked a few people what it could do and everyone was thinking in the low 17 seconds. I raced it and the first run I did with my friend in the car was 16.518 seconds!!!

After a couple more runs we decided to put in the K&N filter we bought earlyer and it did roughly the same. but then I did one last run for the night alone and I manually shifted my automatic. You wouldn't belive it but I ran a 16.223!!! anyone have any cheap mods I could do to just scrape into the 15 second bracket?

Aye' everyone always underestimates the power of a manual-auto trans.

Good for you.

Re: Just raced my 97GT in the quater mile

you don't want to shifting down manually to often that's where you'll be doing the most damage, gears don't like being meshed violently. shifting manually is just taking the shifter and shifting the tranny into first gear and working through the gears yourself instead of the tranny.

Re: Just raced my 97GT in the quater mile

I race my 97 gtp at the 1/4 mile. I always shift manualy with the auto-trans. If you do it right it will shift at just a little higher Rpm. I know in mine it will shift to second gear even when my lever is still in first gear(??) so doing it in first gear does not seem to help but going into third it helps (but just after that shift ive gone a quarter mile.)

First mod: race without your friend in the car. Extra weight = bad

All this talk about manually shifting is worthless. When racing with a stock pcm, you should launch in 2nd gear. Later before the car shifts to 3rd gear, shift up into 3. When you try and shift manually, the computer does its own thing anyway. You basically have no control over shift points. In other words, its a bad idea, and a good way to really wear on your transmission. I got my GT down to 15.1 using this shifting method.

PJVargy - your FOR manually shifting, no your AGAINST manually shifting, NO, your FOR manually shifting, No, your AGAINST manually shifting!, right i really cant decide,

1. [against it!] you say its worthless (All this talk about manually shifting is worthless)

2. [for it!] you recoment using a methoud of manually shifting (you should launch in 2nd gear. Later before the car shifts to 3rd gear, shift up into 3)

3. [against it!] you say manually shifting is a bad idea (When you try and shift manually, the computer does its own thing anyway. You basically have no control over shift points. In other words, its a bad idea, and a good way to really wear on your transmission.)

4. [for it!] you say that by manually shifting you decreased your QM time (I got my GT down to 15.1 using this shifting method)

mabe explain your post a little more....

Re: Just raced my 97GT in the quater mile

is there anyone making a manual trans for these cars? i know there was some manual gp's in the early 90's i wonder if any of those engineers at GM will ever get their head out of their asses and put some sticks in these cars. my sister had sentra seR ,with a 4 banger and a 6speed stick, man that was nice to drive but wouldda been better in a gp.
