timing belt replacement

my 98 gst has 56,3xx miles now and it's about time to change out the timing belt and a few other things. i have a warranty on the car that covers this, and i can choose where to take the car. would taking it to the dealer be the best bet? or an independent shop? i live in austin, so if any of you can recommend a good place...

on all my other cars i've ever had, i've done this type of work myself. of course they've never been turbocharged before...so it scares me a bit. i think i'll sit this one out and be happy just paying the $75 deductible and letting someone else do it.

what else should i be changing out right now?
tranny oil, radiator flush and fill...can anyone add to this list???
thanks.

Re: timing belt replacement

The dealer is your best bet for the tbelt swap. They screw it up about 3/4 of the time, regular shops screw it up 95% of the time.

Maybe spark plugs and wires if you havent done it in a while. Were you planning on doing the balancer belt also? If not, you should definetely consider it.

Re: timing belt replacement

Tranny oil is 30K is I remember correctly. So you can do that also. That is something you can do by yourself easily.

Re: timing belt replacement

the fluids and shit i'll do.
it's cheaper and less work for me to let them do the timing though.
plugs and wires were swapped out at 50k, so maybe another 5k before i swap them out again.

anything else i should be doing?

Re: timing belt replacement

the fuel filter is a pain in the ass. make sure you go with the OEM or at leat napa. the only problem i had was with the lower line (IN). it leaked so i tighted it and that didnt work so i pulled it off and put a 2x4 under the line to make sure the male and female (nipple) connected tightly. no leaks after that. oh then remove the 2x4

Re: timing belt replacement

Most dealership techs wont even change the filter. So if you pay to have it done, put a mark of some sort on the old one so you'll know if it was changed. They only get paid like .2 hours to swap that, and it takes forever. So they dont do it.
