recall?
My '97 s10 wipers had dealer recall work done (free). They would just stop working, but only when it rained. Maybe yours are recalled also??

Try tapping on the wiper motor. If the wipers start working, the circuit board under the plastic cover has loose connections where the contacts from the plug goes thru the board. Unplug the motor plug and resolder the contacts.

DO NOT LET SOME SHIT DEALER TELL YOU OTHERWISE AND TRY TO CHARGE YOU 150$ LIKE THEY TRIED TO CHARGE ME. I PRESENTED THE GUVERNMENT DOCUMENTS AND THEY CAVED, IT IS MANDATORY THAT THIS BE DONE TO ALL S-10S on RECALL NOTICE. WINDSHIELD WIPER COMPUTERS ON OLD s-10s ARE RECALLED DEALERS *********MUST********* replace them FREE. I will try to post the URL to recall info that you can present to dealer for free repair. |

windshield wipers
I pulled out the printed circuit board -- no easy task -- and resoldered the five connections to from the plug to the circuit board. The solder there is weak and it cracks. The wipers and washers have been working fine since.
There are many S-10's, Astros, etc., which use this same setup -- my neighbor has one. I did the same thing to his after he had taken it to a dealer about three times and he has had no problems ever since. In the case of the motor humming and nothing happening, it sounds like the linkage has come loose from the ball on the crank connected to the motor shaft. Chevy uses a cheap plastic insert that once removed, or after it has some wear on it pops off. I made a copper wire collar to go around the flange on the bottom of this plastic piece, and mine has not popped off since. Later.. eti engineer |

Re: windshield wipers
thanks for info - actually fixed it months ago by buying the circuit board ($30) and replacing the suspect one - took 30 mins, and no problems.
the non-working wiper arm: removing the wiper arm showed that it has a tapered plastic insert, which matches a splined 'drive' shaft. This must be a 'fail-safe' design, to prevent the motor overloading if the wiper blades can't move - as when frozen to the glass. All that was necessary, was to scrape the plastic out from between the metal splines, and tighten up the arm until the splines bit into the plastic again - easy when u see it. with rgrds, expat101 |
