1987 cherokee air filter soaked w/ motor oil

Just bought a 1987 jeep cherokee w/ a 4.0 inline 6 cyl. Runs great 130,00 miles. There is oil leaking all over th right side of the engine. Inside the airbox the air filter was soaked w/ oil.

Went to local shop they siad a clogged pcv hose was causing this. Any ideas on how to cure this.

Try the search function for this problem. Theres about 50 threads for the same problem. All 4 L engines do this eventually, it seems.

Sorry for my ignorance, but where is the "valve cover"? Is it the one covering the cylinder head (a.k.a rocker arms cover)?

Re: 1987 cherokee air filter soaked w/ motor oil

On the valve cover there are two hoses. The one at the front of the engine is to let fresh air into the engine. The one at the rear is to allow vacuum to suck fumes from the engine into the manifold. The rear hose comes from a disk that has a 2.8 mm diameter 'metered' orifice. This hole becomes plugged. When it does, the oil fumes that result from engine blow-by now can escape only through the front hose and into the air filter, and by blowing past seals, such as the rear engine seal, or around the valve cover. Remove the vacuum hose, remove the orifice disk and clean the hole (drill it out if necessary) This will solve the problem.

Whoa..whoa..whoa...you don't have to remove your valve cover because of this problem. It's the CCV hose that is located on the top(toward the firewall) of the valve cover. It's thin and plugs into the intake manifold. It's clogged and needs to be cleaned!!! Take the hose off and run some brake cleaner in it. I used some safety wire and ran it through the hose. It did the trick and my air filter is oil free!! I hope you got this in time!!!

There is a soft fix for this. The rubber gromet that fits into the valve cover and plastic tubing that connects has been enlarged. Of course you will pay a premium at the Chrysler parts house. I thinks its normal for these in-line 6's to asperate some oil into those lines. At the price of $40 it might be worth it to clean the lines instead of buying a new kit for which there are 2 and both are priced at approx $40 each.
