Paint chipping

I have a '94 SL with a sunroof and the area/strip between the sunroof and the front window of the car is totally dried out--so much so that the paint has dried, cracked, and peeled off. I'm planning to chip away the VERY little dry paint that's there but how would I keep that area looking nice? Is there anything I could use to bring back the color and protect it?

Re: Paint chipping

If the paint is that bad, you'll probably need it repainted. Wax and paint sealants wont do much if it is already in such bad shape. Post this in the 'detailing' part of the forum, under 'cars in general' to get a more detailed response from people in that field of work.

Re: Paint chipping

do you have comprehensive coverage on your vehicle? if so, it'll be covered by your insurance.

Really? Hmm....do I just call the insurance and tell them that my paint is chipping or something?

Re: Paint chipping

Re: Paint chipping

WHOA!....are you saying that since I have comprehensive coverage...I can get paint chips on my hood fixed for free...and my premiums wont go up?

Gateway, my actual question is this:
I have relatives that have had lets say 3 minor, [under $500 each] claims on their home owner's insurance (a bike and 2 cameras), and their home-owners insurance tried to drop them(seriously...no other claims)...I can't afford my car insurance to go up a dime....but i have quite a few nicks in my paint on the hood, due to rocks and $^%#...can I honestly get this paid for without negative consequences???...sorry, i'm a bit tipsy, so i appologize if this didn't make sense, but any info regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Paint chipping

Homeowners and auto insurance is different. I am solely an auto insurance agent. Insurance companies can drop insurance for too many claims. It is their own discretion, and they make their own underwriting guidelines.

I can 100% guarantee you that paint chips on your car will be covered under comprehensive coverage on your auto policy. I had paint chips on my car fixed as a matter of fact. I went to a car wash and it was a do-it-yourself type. The hose had so much power it chipped the HELL out of my hood. To repaint the hood cost $700+, but my deductible was $250, so that's all I paid. You are responsible for your deductible for (ie: deductible is $500, you pay the first $500)

some VERY good advice here. usually lowering your comp deductible is VERY inexpensive. I lowered my comp deductible from $500 to $250, and it only cost me a few dollars per month. Definitely worth it. When I turn 25 and my rates go down I'm gonna lower it to $100.

Call your insurance company and get a quote for lowering your comp deductible.

Re: Paint chipping

FYI, I just went and quoted a change in deductible from $250 to $100, here is the result.

Effect on Premium for the Entire Policy Term
The following information is provided for comparison purposes only.
Premium Prior to Change: $714.00
Premium After Change: $748.00

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Difference: $34.00 increase

Re: Paint chipping

Yeah...my deductable is already a grand...forgot about that...I need every break I can get on my insurance, so lowering it isn't in the near future.

Re: Paint chipping

what state do you live in ? lowering from 1k to 500 or even 250 (depending on your state) shouldn't be too much. Like I said, it's usually only a few dollars, unless you live in a state with expensive insurance/you are young/have some tickets or accidents on your record.

let me get this straight: b/c I have comprehensive insurance, I can get my nicked-up hood repainted for only the cost of the deductible? How about repainting the entire car?
