Check Engine Light 98 Explorer 5.L V8

I have a 1998 Ford Explorer EB with 5.0L EFI V8. Check engine lite came on. Had a diagnosis that indicated that the code suggested that the computer needed re-programming and referred to a Ford Dealership. Alldata was source for the information to repair shop.

Took to Ford dealership and after waiting for 3 hours, they agreed that the problem in the check engine light indeed was caused by the fact that the computer need re-programming. Cost $46 for the 3rd party diagnosis and $74 for the re-programming at the dealership.

Lesson learned: (1) Do not accept that major repairs are required because a check engine light comes on, (2) do some independent research, i.e. these forums, and check on-line tech bulletins. Specifically, on 5.0L V8 Explorers, this re-programming has been known by Ford, yet kept from customers. Without an honest diagnostician, I could have been told that the code required replacement of a catalytic convertor, a MAF Sensor or any number of expensive repairs. The repair notice even confirms that, in the past, Ford has been suggesting that catalytic convertors need replacing, when all that was required is a 15-20 minute hour re-programming of the on-board computer.

As a ford tech I can say that these updates are available for almost all vehicles - as problems occur in the field engineers are comming up with fixes - luck for you this fix was a lot cheaper than the high dollar bill that comes with new converters that the only way to fix this problem pre update from ford
