'02 Aurora Nav question

I got a Nav unit from an '02 Aurora and got it installed in my '99 Intrigue and got everything working but I do have a question.
Where is the GPS Antenna located in the Aurora? I got mine mounted next to the windshield HVAC vent and it seems to work but I do lose GPS signal once in a while.

The stock GPS antenna is mounted underneath the rear shelf.
It's in the trunk, between the speakers.

Re: '02 Aurora Nav question

Marc,

Thank you for the information. I have seen a Lexus 430 with the GPS Antenna on the rear shelf and it got me wondering about the Aurora.
Now I just need to find the extension harness, or the corect antenna, to move mine in the rear.
Did your Aurora come with the NAV unit? How do you like it?
I ended up with two units and after installing one in my Intrigue I have one spare. The only thing I do not like about it is the fact that it is CD-based not DVD.

Thank you

99 Intrigue....I have a 2001 4.0. The navigation radio wasn't
available that year. I do have aftermarket navigation, a
Garmin Street Pilot III. This is an excellent unit. I needed
it because I have a bad habit of getting lost the first time
I go to a new place. Now that doesn't happen anymore.
There may be a problem in mounting the GPS antenna
under the rear shelf. I think that the nav radio is tied
into the Onstar, and the GPS antenna is connected
to the Onstar components that are found behind the
the rear seat back. You would probably have to have the
Onstar system that was used with the nav radio to mount
the GPS antenna under the rear shelf.

Aurora NAV

Marc,

You are probably right about the OnStar.
I have seen a few NAV radio antennas that had a long enough cable to mount it in the rear shelf.
I know you can get the NAV working without the OnStar, the way mine works, and there are very few requirements for it. You have to have a VSS signal coming to the radio, I got mine from the Instrument Panel, and you must have a BCM that puts out a Class 2 Power Mode for the radio, and I think all the '01 and '02 Auroras did this as they have a newer radio than the '00. I have to fool mine to think it is getting the Class 2 mesage Power Mode as the NAV unit does not have an Ignition line. I like the fact that it looks OEM, even the back-lighting, and the radio sounds really good even without the Amp. I just wish I didn't have to install a CD Changer in the trunk to be able to play CDs while using the NAV. Once I started using the NAV I could not go back to being without it. Great addition to any car.

Thank you
