question for all you d15 drivers

Okay about two months ago my timing belt broke on my cars original engine (d15b2) and my friend said he could get another exact same one from cheap online..so we got it and put it in. And it's a jdm motor ..but anyways.. I noticed last night on the stamp that it just says D15B and I don't even have my old motor anymore to compare it to and I don't remember if my old stamp said d15b2 or just d15b...also this one has a grey valve cover where as my old one was black..not sure if that really matters but oh well. So is this a slightly different motor than the usdm d15b2?

Also I forgot to add that I just ordered the long block nothing else.

Re: question for all you d15 drivers

A Quick Engine List

Since everyone always asks, "which engine can i put in my 4g?" heres a small list.. feel free to add to it.

direct bolt in engines: (least performance to most performance)
D15B1 -70hp
D15B6 -70hp
D15Z1 - SOHC VTEC-E
D15B2 - DPI, 92HP
D15B7 - 92-95 DX/LX, MPFI 105hp
D16Y7 - 96-00 DX, "DPMPFI" 105hp (?)

direct bolt in performance engines:
D16A6 or SOHC ZC - 108hp, great upgrade from DX/LX engine. cheap.
JDM D15B - welcome to VTEC. nice peppy engine, 125-130hp

does the engine work? 'cause a D15B is vtec.

I'm curious... Is that the new engine in your sig with the grey valve cover? I don't think it's vtec because all the SOHC vtec engines I've seen have the spark plugs in the front of the valve cover (closer to the header). I haven't seen any 1.5 vtecs though so I'm not sure.

it works great, there is no VTEC on the valve cover though. And yes it's the one in my sig pic.

Re: question for all you d15 drivers

I'd like to say the d15b should be a jdm block. on usdm models they will print out the full d15b2 on jdm motors they'll stamp it d15b.

the reason why i believe this is my friend has a jdm type R motor = stamped b18c

and the udsm type R motor is stamped B18c5.

Hey i could be wrong.

Re: question for all you d15 drivers

turtlecrxsi is right the plugs would be on the exhaust manifold side if it was the jdm vtec one http://www.hmotorsonline.com/shop/images/d15b.jpg
All the sohc vtecs i've seen are the same way too.

correct. I still have my old crappy dual point efi on it ...I'm in a slow process of converting it to multi-point. But what I really wondered is if it's any different from the usdm d15b2...I know it's not the 130 hp vtec d15. I was just wondering...I'de just go have it dynoed but I'm really financially tapped right now.

Any more input is welcome

How about the year on the block? The circles on the front I mean. That might help figure it out a little.

I've never heard of that before. where do I need to look and what exactly to look for to determine that?

EDIT: tried to get pics but my digi cam is a absolute peice of crap. I also forgot to add.. on the rear of the valve cover closest to the distributor is this wierd plate/cover thingy with 2 studs sticking out and I never could figure out what it was for. My friend says it's probably just a oil cooler because they are standard jdm or whatever... could this for vtec?

EDIT2: okay since my camera sucks I drew a picture to help show where this thing is. bare with me here guys.... lol

Re: question for all you d15 drivers

doesnt matter the enigine. Its still a d series 1.5L block so a 1.5l timing belt on a 1.5l d15b head will work.

There is a d15b engine that is mpfi and is very simillar to a d15b2. Plus a d15b is vtec and not. plus the vtec d15b doesnt say vtec on the valve cover, it says HONDA!!!

and itechengineers does ur friends b18c have the red valve cover. Because a b18c could be a TypeR or a GSR engine.
And

umm I think you're misreading my question. I know that the timing belt would work.. obviously..and the engine is in my car running happily. I just want to know if it's the same engine as my old D15 block that's all..

Re: question for all you d15 drivers

hey, on the b18c, i could be wrong it may be a GSR motor (it does have a red vavle cover). I remember he gets mad and defensive everytime i call it a type R. I know for a fact that he ordered a JDM B18 and got it shipped in from jap-land (im not being racist here).
