I noticed my Town Car Exec smokes white smoke when I first start it.. it is only about 5 seconds. More of a poof of smoke. I also think it does it when I start from a stop..another poof at that time. Any ideas.. do I need a tune up or what?? I just bought this car about three weeks ago...

Re: I need the patch for my car so it will stop smoking
1st guess would be, you need new Valve Stem Seals.

Re: I need the patch for my car so it will stop smoking
For a shop to do it would be $700 to $1200 and up depending on who you ask, and the method the use to do it.
The methods would be 1) remove the cams and replace the seals 2) Loosen the cams enough to remove the springs which would be intensely more difficult 3) remove the heads and R&R them. If you chose to do it yourself you would most likely attempt to loosen the cams because there would be less engine teardown ie camchain removal. The parts themselves would be around $50~$60 including gaskets. All the remaining cost is labor.

Just got this car and it is the first week on the road. Changed all the fluids ( not oil yet) but it is clean. Poofs - just like he says- white- mechanic said to wait out the first tank of gas as we put fuel inj cleaner and do not know how long since the car was ran. So keeping our fingers crossed that is all it is.
Update- yup, just got it back from shop and he said exactly what you did- valve stem seals! Said to just watch oil and let it be unless it gets worse as it seems very minor. So, will not put the cash into it as it is a 93 and not worth putting that kind of money into! Last edited by kittenmueller; 10-26-2004 at 08:38 AM. Reason: update |
