Egr Valve ?

On My 96 Ztt I Can Heard Like An Exhaust Leak On Back Of Engine. I Took It To A Shop And The Guy Said That It Might Be My Egr Valve. How Hard Is It To Work Or Fix This Problem?

There is an EGR (Exhaust Gas Reflux/Recirculation) valve on the back of the engine just under the intake collector. It then comes around into 2 arms underneath either side of the intake collector and then up into the intake collector. This helps to lower the flame temperature of the combustion, which helps reduce NOx emissions. You will definitely *NOT* pass emissions if you take this out.

If it sounds like its coming from the back of the engine, chances are the valve (or pipes) have rusted through or something. Check out the arms to make sure they're bolted onto the bottom of the collector tight, and feel around the arms for cracks/rust. If the arms appear to be alright, its the valve. Replace the valve. You can try taking it off and working on it, but if its rusted through or something, then its just gonna be a waste of time.

Mikeman, Do You Have More Info On Replacing The Egr Valve In Case Thats My Problem? I'm Plannig On Swapping Out My Down Pipes And Hopefully I Can Kill Two Birs With One Stone.

IIRC, the egr bolts straight onto the back of the engine. All you need to do is undo the bolts holding it on, and literally put the new one on and bolt it back up. You can't really do the downpipes at the same time, as its kinda not near the egr. You can easily take the egr off by just reaching behind the engine from the top. My service manuals are downstairs and I really cbf checking for you though.
