Would not go into gear.

I own a 95 SL2 with a 5-spd and has 150,000 miles on it. Tonight it started having problems with not going into any gear. It only lasted for about 5-10 minutes and then seemed to stop. Right now it seems to shift fine and only acts up intermittently. The car has the original clutch, but that seems to work ok.(no slipping or funny noises). Anyone got any ideas as to the cause or how much it may cost to fix?

Thanks in advance.
Roadkill.

Re: Would not go into gear.

the shiftcables do wear out sometimes, not sure if that would be intermitent. about $150 worth of parts if i remember. is there any looseness or freeplay in the shifter?

Mine had a problem much like that where it didn't like to shift into first gear when at a complete stop. I then read that the repair manual says to replace the tranny fluid (Dexron 3 ATF NOT gear oil) every 30k, so I replaced the fluid and now it shifts nice again. Give that a try as it is alot cheaper than cables or a clutch!

Well, I took the car to the dealer and had them troubleshoot the problem. They found..... exactly nothing. They drove the car for about 10 miles around town and never could get it to act up. There is plenty of fluid both in the tranny and in the clutch reservoir. There is no excessive play in the shifter. I have a suspicion that it may be the slave cylinder going bad. A neighbor on mine had a slave cylinder go out on his truck and had the same problem. The only difference was that his was actually leaking fluid and was not an intermittent problem.
