Re: Going in for the Notorious Exhaust Stud Breaking repar!

How can you "easily" tell if you need this repair or not? I have a 94 Villager I just purchased with 110,000 miles. After reading other entries in this forum I realize I need a tune up and possibly an O2 sensor replacement. How do I know if the exhaust stud is broken? If it is not broken is it worth it to just do the upgrade to the new redesigned part? Thanks.

That is high way robbery. That repair can be done at home with some good tool and some jack stands. All they are going to replace is the studs that are in the manifold not the manifold or any other part. I can almost be 100% sure they will try and tell you you need the exhuast gaskets as well.

studs broken

When the engine is cold - you can look & reach around behind the engine on the exaust manifold and feel if the bolts are coming out or not.
When I bought mine with 100,000 it had 3 of the 6 broken. The only ones where were up to doing it, with out taking off the heads was the dealer. They do them all the time - think it was 500 for doing the rear. It did need a gasket as the heat burnt out the gasket -
I sounds weird - too when this happens. I have one broke on the front
right behind the air cond. compressors - can feel some air coming out so made a little shield out of sheet metal to keep it from heating up the a/c.
not ready to spend another 500. To bad that wasn't covered by some recall as it is a wide spread problem.
