Question Question about the fan

I am currently (very reluctantly) selling my 1999 S 156 2.5 V6. One chap who came around commented that the fan should not come on as soon as you start the car, is this true? As far as I can remember it has always come on.

Sounds like either your thermostat or worse still your water pump is knackered, I had a similar probelm with the fan running quite readily and the engine overheating at a say a constant 4000rpm on long runs. Around town it was ok, the fan just came on.

Fortunately it was still under warranty from the garage I bought from, the stat was replaced but made no difference, the water pump was then subsequently replaced. There is a common problem that the impeller on the pump cracks and when the engine demands a higher rate of coolant the spindle just spins round. Unusually good news for a 156 is if it's the thermostat, the repair bill is minimal, the water pump is very bad news. This is expensive to repair, requires specialist tools and was a two day job and cost about £800

Hopes this helps a little

Best regards
