Post 90 Cutlass Ignition Switch

I have been have trouble where the car will just quit as I am driving. Every now and then I will get smoke coming out of the steering column by the switch when I start it. I have been told that it is the switch? I am trying to find out how to change it. Thank you.

Re: 90 Cutlass Ignition Switch

These switches are not hard to change but you will need to remove the steering wheel and the locking plate below it. You will need a couple of tools, a steering wheel puller and a locking plate compressor. You can rent these from a rental store or autozone. This is for the locking cylinder only. For the actual switch that is locate on the lower part of the column you will only need a couple of wrenches and some time. The actual switch comes off easily and goes back on relatively easily too. You may need to lower the steering column slightly to get to it but this is easily done. Unplug the wires, remove the contact switch and replace in reverse. If only the contact part of the switch is bad you don't need to remove the locking cylinder.

Lightbulb If ther is smoke

If your trying to change the Igni switch,You will have to drop the steering colume, there is an electrical switch up on top of the steering colm, that the key switch operates, Its not that hard, there should not be any electric around the key switch to cause the problem.
