2002 Suburban A/C Related Heavy Rattle

I am getting an intermittant heavy rattle coming from the passenger side of the engine compartment during acceleration when the a/c is on. At first I thought something was caught in the radiator fan, but I ruled that out. I think it may be one of the A/C lines smacking against the inner plastic wheel housing on the pass. side, but am not sure. Has anyone ever had this problem? If so, what fixed it? Thanks!

Sounds like the clutch on the compressor is going bad or the compressor itself.

I believe you are absolutely correct. Going to the dealer at 34.8k miles on Monday morning. Just under the warranty wire on this one. Thanks!

Thunderbolt hit it dead-on. This noise was the result of a bad compressor (clutch lock-up). The problem is evidently widespread throughout the GM Suburbans, Tahoes, etc. Our trip to the dealer resulted in a replaced compressor (under warranty, thankfully). This Suburban is one of many, as our local dealer replaced the compressors in 5 last week and 4 the week before. They've lost count of the ones prior, but it has been loads of them since the summer months started here on the East Coast...

My 2001 Chevrolet Suburban has started doing the same thing. Spoke to the dealer this morning and he stated he has replaced 4 in the past two weeks. Has anyone had Chevrolet replace the compressor out of warranty?

Hi new here. I have a friend that has replaced her ac out of warranty and it cost her over $2500 and now she has life time warranty on it. But it is a hassle when every month to every other she has to take it in to get it fixed.
I am going through this now with mine, only had it 2 months (bought it used) 1995 sub.

The problem is caused by bad reed valves in the A/C compressor, there are service bulletins on it, the most recent one in may of 04. It requires at least an updated hose, compressor, and accumalator, and more if debris is found in the orifice tube. It is important to use GM or ACDelco parts for repair as a lot of the aftermarket have not made the necessary modifications to update their parts.....Joe
