windows xp

Well I figured this new area needed some threads so I thought I could bitch about XP for a while. Man this OS sucks, I feel like I'm in a cartoon or something and you have to go through a bunch of crap just to get anything to actualy do anything. Well I'm not exactly a "computer guy" I mean I know enough to mess things up but not enough to fix it, but I think they could have done a better job with XP.
I hate computers anyways, if it wasn't for my job and AF I would probably never touch a computer (exept for the ocasional porn search ) so I guess it dosn't realy matter what I think.
Well anyone else use the POS OS and have any comments on it?

I have a friend who is a networker for a large company and he's into computers. He likes it alot, but says it uses a lot of RAM. I've heard from others it looks like a Fisher Price OS with big icons and the color scheme.

I am happy with my computer at home the way it is. I am running ME right now and have had no problems yet....so I am not gonna change anything while it's being nice to me.

I haven't had a need to go to the XP platform yet. Once we start getting deep into developing .Net applications, we'll probably have to start using the framework on XP boxes since that will be what all our new clients will be purchasing.

I run Xp on the big machine right now and have since cut away the ugly look and gone back to the classic Windows 2000 look. It has it's bugs but it works better than Windows 2000 in certain areas though my frame rartes have dropped in games, though they are still well about 30 so I really don't care about that.

I love it. Getting rid of the bubbles took about 15 sec. that was pretty much all I had to do other than pop the cd in.

only thing I'm not happy with is the cd burning being "crap", but it would just be wrong for ms to do a good job with something like that.

I find it to be very "I'm-assuming-you-don't-know-shit-about-computers-so-I'm-going-to-treat-you-like-a-2-year-old-OK!"

Well, screw that. It is very soft-touch looking, but I'm not really into that, and man, it is resource-intensive. You need a kickin P4 or good AMD to run it. I will stick to ME. I just wish they would re-introduce the file extensions. (ie, .exe, .app, not merely "game")

PS, I'm considering Linux now (if my mom permits me)

If you know anything about computers, you can set XP up to run very well, with a few tweaks here and there. I like it alot more then when I was on Win2k, and it blows ME out of the water.

My pIII 866 runs it fine.

Heh, implying ME is the OS to choose over XP is just silly.

And you could dual boot XP and Linux, or does the "I'm-assuming-you-don't-know-shit-about-computers-so-I'm-going-to-treat-you-like-a-2-year-old-OK!" thing apply?

I usually wait a year before buying Microsoft's newest platform, just to give them time to fix all the bugs they have with it, I didn't buy Win 98 when it first came out, and guess what? They came out with Win 98 Second Edition As for ME I didn't even consider it, it's just a toy platform based on Win 98 with a touched up apperance to jack more money out of the consumer

Well, I'm not going to get Linux (my mom thinks it will kill the comp )

I just find that XP is so richly textured it is hard to run, and I'm not used to it yet (I still miss the file extensions)

What do you mean by the file extensions? I see all my extension just fine.

If you mom knows that little about computers, you could clearly install linux without her knowing.

And what are you on about with the file extensions and the over-rich texture?

It's called the "MS default idiot setting". If you're a power user, they've hidden everything from you and turned on all the annoying "helpful" settings. I don't have XP, but I'm sure there's a way to make it show up like in the previous versions of Windows.

When I get XP, the first thing to go is the default theme. I don't want that cartoony preschool shit fucking up my computer. It's bloody ugly!! I'll get the whistler theme instead. (Watercolor/Professional).

File extensions: The name of the file is there, but in win95, it will have .exe, .app, .wpd, etc. ME and XP (havent used 2K) hide them. Can I turn that feature off?

The over-rich texture. It reminds me of a porus plastic-thing, like those creatures you put in water and then expand. I like it a little more functional. Just personal preference from years of win95 and 98.
