i'm trying to replace just the cam gear(teeth missing) but i'd rather not have to remove engine and cam. is there a special puller or tool to make the job easier for me? any help or tips would be appreciated. auto book says "normaly engine and cam must be removed" which leads me to believe not absolutely

Re: 88 grand am cam timing gear replacement
Depends on how much room you have. If you can get a gear puller in there then you won't need the engine out.

How Did You Make Out?
How Did you make out, I've found that you can usually split the gear by drilling each side, the when you get it off, sometimes the shaft for the gear is threaded other times you'll have to make a thread, either by using a tap or running a bolt through.
Good Luck! |

Re: 88 grand am cam timing gear replacement
if it's a 2.5, the cam gear cannot be removed with the engine in the car. The gear is pressed on and the puller required to remove it will not fit in the engine compartment.

Re- Timing Gear
I know for a fact that the gear can be split(thus not having to pull the motor) I was given the information from a friend who is a GM master Tech, GM has had a noise problem at start up with these gears, This is a GM dealer fix. Also A Mr.Rob Fix I have Done 9 and have never had to pull the motor.
You do not have to pull the Motor.. Mr.Rob Lic Mech Auto/Truck/Diesel/Propane/ASE Master Tech..... |
